{"id":5188,"date":"2018-09-25T17:18:57","date_gmt":"2018-09-25T17:18:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/el-que-faltaba-de-los-calatrava\/"},"modified":"2019-02-16T07:54:56","modified_gmt":"2019-02-16T06:54:56","slug":"the-fourth-stooge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/the-fourth-stooge\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fourth Stooge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s\u00a0<i>Bienal de Sevilla<\/i>\u00a0made history with last night\u2019s concert by the celebrated Ni\u00f1o de Elche, but not in a good way, because it was a painful disgrace, one of the saddest things I\u2019ve ever seen in this festival, and I\u2019ve attended all its editions, so I\u2019ve seen it all. Before this kid was born I was already attending\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0festivals, from the\u00a0<i>Giraldillo<\/i>\u00a0award, won by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/1\/19\/Calixto-S%C3%A1nchez-y-Eduardo-Rebollar\">Calixto S\u00e1nchez<\/a>\u00a0in 1980, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/una-decada-sin-mario-maya\">Mario Maya<\/a>\u2019s first\u00a0<i>Giraldillo del Baile<\/i>\u00a0in 1982 and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Franco\/c112t\/5782cbe80cf2f626feb17788\">Manolo Franco<\/a>\u2019s first\u00a0<i>Giraldillo del Toque<\/i>\u00a0in 1984. And I can say I had never before seen someone embarrass himself as much as last night at the Lope de Vega theater, a venue that should be sacred.<\/p>\n<p>Antonio Zoido, the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u2019s director, should have known better and refrained from inviting such musical monstrosity to a place that has been the stage for the greatest stars of flamenco, an art that Francisco Contreras Molina (Ni\u00f1o de Elche\u2019s real name) hates to the point of ridiculing it whenever he has a chance, as it was the case yesterday with the presentation of his latest album\u00a0<i>Antolog\u00eda del cante heterodoxo<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>We could say that it\u2019s a pity that he\u2019s wasting his talent, but the reality is that he doesn\u2019t have any of the talent some people attribute to him, although he\u2019s not stupid, either. Let\u2019s say he\u2019s competent. He\u2019s unable to sing\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>, because he lacks the main thing, which is the gift of emotion. He\u2019s plain, uncapable of evoking emotions, faking\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0by disguising his voice. Why does he matter, then? He\u2019s just not important, at least from flamenco\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n<p>He might be relevant in this art if he took advantage of his limited abilities to do something acceptable. Yet, instead of doing that, he spends his time ridiculing flamenco and its artists, the great\u00a0<i>maestros<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>maestras<\/i>. I don\u2019t know if you would agree with me if you had been at the theater. Wasn\u2019t him trying to imitate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/20\/Honores-a-Menese-en-Guadalajara\">Menese<\/a>when he talked? He came on stage wearing his street clothing, jeans, t-shirt and sneakers, and got changed on stage in full view of the packed theater. He was literally just wearing his underwear. That gave a hint of what was to come, talking a lot, offending flamenco and God.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, all of that could have been bearable if he would then have given a great performance, but it was the other way around. I won\u2019t even analyze what he did because this is not a show review, but an opinion piece about the presence of this man at the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>. Those comedians who mocked flamenco on TV in the days of Franco\u2019s dictatorship, such as Fernando Esteso, Toni Leblanc or the Calatrava brothers, were funnier. At least they had charisma. But don\u2019t get the impression that the public didn\u2019t laugh with Ni\u00f1o de Elche, they certainly did, whenever he opened his mouth. It was a public with no interest in flamenco, of course. I didn\u2019t see anyone I knew, and I mean it. The public were just his fans, who follow him because he\u2019s the antithesis of flamenco, an art that many Spaniards don\u2019t understand, and that many people consider outdated and uncouth, Ni\u00f1o de Elche among them.<\/p>\n<p>That event doesn\u2019t deserve any more lines. It was a black day for the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0and a monumental mistake of its director.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
