Today, it\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/05\/18\/Remedios-Amaya\">Remedios Amaya<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2018\/09\/27\/Juana-la-del-Pipa\">Juana la del Pipa<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2018\/09\/27\/Juana-Amaya\">Juana Amaya<\/a>, and a century ago it was Mar\u00eda Borrico, La Sarneta or Dolores Monge. Gypsy women have always sung and danced. Some have even played the guitar, such as Tomasa Junquera, the sister of Juan Junquera. They have even created styles of\u00a0<i>cantes por sole\u00e1<\/i>,\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>tangos<\/i>. Mar\u00eda Borrico herself was a singer of\u00a0<i>seguiryas<\/i>\u00a0as good as El Fillo and Silverio, with a\u00a0<i>macho<\/i>\u00a0which is still sung nowadays and gives goosebumps to anyone who listens.<\/p>\n<p>As those three artists invited to the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0performed last night, I couldn\u2019t help thinking about those legendary Gypsy artists who had a hard time, women but also men. There are testimonies of Gypsy\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0about this topic: the opposition of their families to their dreams of performing in caf\u00e9s and theaters. Men didn\u2019t have it as hard as women, of course, but there were cases, some of them very public.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the point, this recital also made us think about what is becoming of flamenco. Yesterday\u2019s performance was authentic flamenco: art, feeling and that spontaneity which those three artists possess. I don\u2019t mean to say that it\u2019s necessary to be Gypsy to have the gift of\u00a0<i>arte jondo<\/i>. You already know my perspective about this topic. Yet, the art of these three women is so closely woven into their own selves that I could barely take a breath the whole evening, even as it wasn\u2019t an epic performance of a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>Juana Amaya,\u00a0<i>bailaora<\/i>\u00a0from Mor\u00f3n, should be prescribed by Health Care. Considering the state of\u00a0<i>baile flamenco<\/i>\u00a0nowadays, this Gypsy woman has that gift which cannot be learned in an academy: art and\u00a0<i>jondura<\/i>. She came with first-class\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0in her ensemble, Enrique el Extreme\u00f1o, El Galli, El Pulga and Manuel Ta\u00f1\u00e9. She also brought her daughter Nazaret Reyes, who follows her school and is very\u00a0<i>flamenca<\/i>, as we could expect. At the guitar was Juan Campallo and percussion was in charge of Paco Vega, from the Puya family of Triana.\u00a0<i>Martinetes, seguiriyas, soleares<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>buler\u00edas<\/i>. It\u2019s incredible how well this\u00a0<i>bailaora<\/i>\u00a0from Mor\u00f3n still dances.<\/p>\n<p>Juana la del Pipa, daughter of that great\u00a0<i>bailaora<\/i>\u00a0from Jerez of the same name, is a\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0even when she\u2019s not singing. I\u2019ll explain it, because I\u2019m sure some people don\u2019t get this. She looks the part, and that says a lot. When she gets on stage, she stands under the beam of light, looking at the public without even blinking, she stands still for twenty seconds and her sole presence is moving. Even as she was nervous, like she claimed. When she sings, with her rough, worn-out voice, she transports us back into flamenco history, when Gypsy\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0still had the scent of tomato soup and forge\u2019s soot. Her\u00a0<i>soleares, seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>tientos-tangos<\/i>\u00a0weren\u2019t memorable, but she herself is memorable, because she has the gift of\u00a0<i>jondura<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Remedios Amaya is one of a kind. This had to be her evening to shine, considering the struggle she\u2019s been having with the illness that has made suffer so much, but which hasn\u2019t diminished her one bit. With an excellent guitarist, El Perla, and an ensemble of\u00a0<i>palmeras<\/i>\u00a0all dressed in black (everything was so black, I don\u2019t get it), Remedios gave it all and some more. She didn\u2019t have a good start in the\u00a0<i>Taranto<\/i>\u00a0and the\u00a0<i>cartagenera grande<\/i>, but she redeemed herself when she\u2019s started singing the\u00a0<i>palos festeros<\/i>\u00a0she\u2019s good at, doing great por\u00a0<i>tangos<\/i>\u00a0and as good as usual por\u00a0<i>buler\u00edas<\/i>, with beautiful lyrics dedicated to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Don-Mora%C3%ADto-no-se-fue-del-todo\/c112t\/1\">Mora\u00edto Chico<\/a>, written by El Chichi, from El Viso. Very happy and talkative, this\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0promised performing her own show in two or three years, and that means she\u2019s here to stay.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
