I remember one evening when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Enrique Morente<\/a>\u00a0was talking about this, even as he wasn\u2019t a regular in\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0himself, although he would sometimes perform in the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0he liked, and he also appreciated their value and their contribution to flamenco. Naturally, he loathed\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0where all that members did was play dominoes or watch soccer games. Whenever people talked about the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0of Seville, he always mentioned Torres Macarena. I don\u2019t think he ever performed there, but he certainly attended its recitals, either with myself or with other friends.<\/p>\n<p>Torres Macarena is the best\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0of Seville, and the oldest. Naturally, it\u2019s one of the best\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0in all Andalusia, together with Juan Breva in M\u00e1laga and La Plater\u00eda in Granada. This\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>, Torres Macarena, will host, in October and part of November, debate sessions about topics of interest for flamenco aficionados. Topics such as the\u00a0<i>Bienal de Flamenco<\/i>, the role of women in\u00a0<i>arte jondo<\/i>, the role of critics and the general history of our art.<\/p>\n<p>It would be unthinkable to hold these sessions in any other\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0in Seville, because the members of this\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0in the Macarena district have always been very interested in the cultural aspects of flamenco, above and beyond the performance of recitals for the enjoyment of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>,\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>toque<\/i>. It\u2019s the only\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0which has celebrated milestones such as the 100th anniversaries of the births of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Manuel Vallejo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/aquel-genial-nino-de-torres\">Manuel Torres<\/a>, to name just a few of their cultural activities, among the many others it has organized through its history.<\/p>\n<p>I will have the honor of coordinating and presenting these debate sessions, starting on this Saturday, October 13, which will be about the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0which just ended. After an introduction by myself of about fifteen minutes, briefly explaining how that festival of Seville came into being, I\u2019ll make an assessment of the previous edition, with a lot to talk about. Soon after, the debate will take place, where aficionados will be able to take part, always with respect and in good flamenco harmony.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to hold these debates in a venerable\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0instead of in the social networks, where all debates end up in a bad way, with lack of respect and even demeaning insults. Debates in the social networks are endless and, sometimes, simply unbearable. The debates at Torres Macarena will be interesting, certainly heated, but with manners and respect prevailing, otherwise I wouldn\u2019t have accepted being the moderator.<\/p>\n<p>After the debate, we\u2019ll have some flamenco performed by young artists who need this type of exposure, and later we\u2019ll have some drinks. The idea is to promote analysis and harmony among the aficionados of Seville and other parts of the world, because in Seville there are aficionados from countries such as Japan, Germany, Italy and Brazil. The doors will be opened for whoever wants to attend, and admission is free, naturally.
