{"id":5161,"date":"2018-10-11T07:53:39","date_gmt":"2018-10-11T07:53:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/tomas-creando-en-su-soledad\/"},"modified":"2019-02-15T22:33:56","modified_gmt":"2019-02-15T21:33:56","slug":"tomas-creating-in-his-loneliness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/tomas-creating-in-his-loneliness\/","title":{"rendered":"Tom\u00e1s, creating in his loneliness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One morning in Seville\u2019s Alameda de H\u00e9rcules, I met an old lady who had been like a daughter for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and Reyes Berm\u00fadez Camacho, his spouse. As everyone knows, Tom\u00e1s and Reyes never had children of their own. They started their relationship when they were teenagers and they were already living together when very young, without having been married, something quite unusual among Gypsies. Reyes, daughter of the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0Antonio El Baboso, from Triana, lost her mother when she was just seven or eight years old.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes\u2019 mother, Salud Camacho, was from a family in Triana with a long flamenco tradition, and she died at the beginning of the 20th century. This made Reyes very close to Tom\u00e1s\u2019 family, and they were neighbors at the San Rom\u00e1n, San Roque and Puerta Osario districts of Seville, in different addresses. They never married and lived together until the genius of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0passed away on July 2, 1952, on N\u00ba 6 Plaza de la Mata, in the house of Elo\u00edsa Alb\u00e9niz and his brother\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/arturo-pavon-un-cantaor-de-armas-tomar\">Arturo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This old lady I met at La Alameda (her nickname was\u00a0<i>La Pirula<\/i>, I think) told me that Tom\u00e1s was a very solitary and extremely sad man, who was unable to sleep properly and whose only pleasure in life was listening records in a portable gramophone which, incidentally, now belongs to me and is in my living room with the slate record where he recorded\u00a0<i>Reniengo<\/i>\u00a0(his wonderful\u00a0<i>seguiriya<\/i>\u00a0originally sung by Frasco el Colorao and Manuel Cagancho), a master record who also belonged to Tom\u00e1s and was gifted to me by the Pav\u00f3n family.<\/p>\n<p>How many\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>\u00a0would Tom\u00e1s have created in the loneliness of his home, without any children around, in that poverty which he experienced his whole life, even as his sister was famous and wealthy?\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/10\/Fernando-el-de-Triana\">Fernando el de Triana<\/a>\u00a0described Tom\u00e1s as a \u201ccopyist\u201d, that is, a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0who faithfully copied the singing style of certain masters. Yet, if we analyze in depth the way he sang and his technique, we\u2019ll notice that Tom\u00e1s was a creator who composed his\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>\u00a0closely following the great flamenco masters. He had a boundless admiration for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/aquel-genial-nino-de-torres\">Manuel Torres<\/a>, particularly this latter Gypsy singer of\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>. I\u2019ve had in my hands records of Manuel which belonged to Tom\u00e1s and they were very worn out, for being played over and over in his gramophone.<\/p>\n<p>However, besides listening to many flamenco records and learning from the great masters in gatherings and private parties, Tom\u00e1s also loved other musical genres, such as classical music, being a huge fan of Chopin. He also loved piano, as Elo\u00edsa, Arturo\u2019s wife, was a pianist, besides being a dancer.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/trece-anos-sin-arturo-pavon\">Arturo Pav\u00f3n S\u00e1nchez<\/a>, the pianist, Tom\u00e1s nephew, told me in Arahal that sometimes when Tom\u00e1s came home from some party, he would find Arturo playing the piano and he would sing him seguiriya. According to Arturo, Tom\u00e1s had a perfect pitch.<\/p>\n<p>Tom\u00e1s was a supernatural musician and\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, able to perform the most complex of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>s, such as the\u00a0<i>seguiriya de Frasco el Colorao<\/i>\u00a0(<i>Y Dios man\u00f3 el remedio<\/i>), without messing up the melody, something which is very hard to do for anyone who didn\u2019t train their voice in a conservatory. He had a great natural talent, a gift. He was extremely shy, something common among geniuses. This shyness was sometimes a problem for him, as he had trouble interacting with people, although he wasn\u2019t asocial. He was dry and disliked pranks.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Talega-y-Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/56ef6b400cf276e9de24fd1a\">Juan Talega<\/a>\u00a0once said that Tom\u00e1s wasn\u2019t a big deal, but it\u2019s anyone guess what he meant by that.<\/p>\n<p>That woman who lived for some time with Tom\u00e1s and Reyes, like an adopted daughter, told me that one morning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/sevilla-se-olvido-de-pepe-pinto\">Pepe Pinto<\/a>\u00a0came looking for him, as he wanted Tom\u00e1s to accompany him on a trip to a nearby town, I think it was Utrera, to get paid for a performance in a private party of some big shot, probably a bullfighter or a rancher. Tom\u00e1s went with him but he returned upset with his brother-in-law, because the\u00a0<i>se\u00f1orito<\/i>\u00a0had humiliated him before he paid them. Pinto told La Pirula that Tom\u00e1s confronted the\u00a0<i>se\u00f1orito<\/i>and, poking his thumb on the man\u2019s belly, told him: \u201cYou should thank God that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>\u00a0didn\u2019t came along!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
