I suppose it means artists of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0who defined a period in flamenco history.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/aquel-genial-nino-de-torres\">Manuel Torres<\/a>, for example, defined flamenco in their time, having a decisive influence in other artists who followed their styles. Chac\u00f3n died in 1929 and even today there are\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0who follow his style. That\u2019s a defining\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Manuel Vallejo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/06\/14\/Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\">Mairena<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0were also defining\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-Paquera-de-Jerez\/c112t\/55f74acd0cf2de902a86840d\">Paquera<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Enrique Morente<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/20\/Honores-a-Menese-en-Guadalajara\">Menese<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Carmen-Linares-Buler%C3%ADas-por-Sole%C3%A1\/c112t\/5638ed1b0cf28330832af8dd\">Carmen Linares<\/a>would also be valid examples.<\/p>\n<p>Is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%BFEs-Miguel-Poveda-un-cantaor-discutido\/c112t\/56aaefe60cf205a1e853fbda\">Miguel Poveda<\/a>\u00a0a defining\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>? He is a big star in our days, without a doubt, but his style won\u2019t make any impact because he hasn\u2019t changed anything. No one seeks to emulate the way he sings, and he hasn\u2019t created a school of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, because that\u2019s something else. Aurelio de C\u00e1diz created a school, and the same goes for Mairena. Yet, almost every day I hear someone say that Poveda is a defining\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, and I wouldn\u2019t have any problem agreeing if that was the case.<\/p>\n<p>In each period in the history of\u00a0<i>cante flamenco<\/i>, there have been artists like this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Catalunya and they\u2019ve had an important role, filling theaters with public and selling thousands of records. We can name several examples, such as Guerrita, Ni\u00f1o de la Huerta,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Canalejas-de-Puerto-Real\/c112t\/5735579f0cf284cf21414fd6\">Canalejas de Puerto Real<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1a-de-la-Puebla\/c112t\/57799c3e0cf2119db9c8edb4\">Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla<\/a>. These are artists who were very famous in their own time but nowadays are not a reference for anyone, except for their die-hard fans. I myself am a fan of all these artists.<\/p>\n<p>We should be careful with those things because there are hundreds of thousands of young people all over the world who are interested in learning about flamenco and they try to know more about it in the social networks, where people post whatever they want as if they were expert flamencologists. The other day I read a post in Facebook where someone said that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/07\/13\/Alfredo-Tejada\">Alfredo Tejada<\/a>\u00a0was the biggest genius among all geniuses of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. He\u2019s a great\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, but claiming that he\u2019s the biggest genius of them all is a bit of a stretch\u2026 This doesn\u2019t help this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0at all, and also makes it very confusing for those aficionados who are starting to learn about flamenco.<\/p>\n<p>One evening I was chatting with Ni\u00f1o de Fregenal, Gordito de Triana and the guitarist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/15\/Rosal%C3%ADa-de-Triana-y-Antonio-Sanl%C3%Bacar\">Antonio Sanl\u00facar<\/a>\u00a0in the now-vanished Venta Vega in Seville, and the three of them agreed that if there was ever a defining\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, that would have been Pepe Marchena, and I agree. For starters, Marchena was a star, possibly the first big star of Andalusian\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. He would fill up bullfighting rings, sell records, make movies\u2026 He would be welcomed with marching bands when he came to perform in towns, he would be gifted with country houses and paid a hundred thousand pesetas for singing four fandangos, at a time when four million Spaniards experienced dire poverty.<\/p>\n<p>Besides all that, Marchena changed the course of Andalusian\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and contributed like no other to dignify it at a time when\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0were still perceived by part of society as nothing but lowlifes. Most important of all, this genius from Marchena left an impressive discography and a school that still endures. Marchena renown has grown as time has gone by, and after his death he\u2019s still a reference in many palos of flamenco. Thus, he can truly be considered a defining\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, a real one.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
