{"id":5147,"date":"2018-10-25T18:25:21","date_gmt":"2018-10-25T18:25:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/paradas-y-el-pele-de-cordoba\/"},"modified":"2019-02-15T21:16:20","modified_gmt":"2019-02-15T20:16:20","slug":"paradas-and-el-pele-de-cordoba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/paradas-and-el-pele-de-cordoba\/","title":{"rendered":"Paradas and El Pele de C\u00f3rdoba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m very happy to learn that Paradas will dedicate its\u00a0<i>Semana Flamenca<\/i>\u00a0to the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from C\u00f3rdoba, Manuel Moreno Maya\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-Pele\/c112t\/577f24a20cf2a27045f18292\"><i>El Pele<\/i><\/a><\/em>, even as there are many other more experienced\u00a0<i>maestros<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>maestras<\/i>\u00a0who would be delighted to be awarded such great honor. It\u2019s not that El Pele will be given the next\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%BFVuelve-lo-de-la-Llave-del-Cante\/c112t\/563987c60cf275e9c596a72e\">Golden Key of Cante<\/a>, but this\u00a0<i>Semana Flamenca<\/i>\u00a0(\u201cFlamenco Week\u201d) is among the best events of this kind in all of Spain, or at least the one which takes flamenco more seriously, and I suppose that El Pele will feel happy by being honored in a town that has such high regard for flamenco.<\/p>\n<p>When this great\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0was born in C\u00f3rdoba\u2019s San Pedro district, in 1954, many of the great stars of flamenco who would define his personality were still alive, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>, for example, of whom El Pele is a big fan. Also alive at that time were\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Vallejo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora Pav\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aurelio-Sell%C3%A9s\/c112t\/578edefd0cf27c010359849d\">Aurelio de C\u00e1diz<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-Perla-de-C%C3%A1diz-y-Paco-Cepero\/c112t\/5701d02b0cf234e91927bc9b\">La Perla<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/sevilla-se-olvido-de-pepe-pinto\">Pepe Pinto<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Canalejas-de-Puerto-Real\/c112t\/5735579f0cf284cf21414fd6\">Canalejas\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Varea\/c112t\/578ed2430cf26df1ae5b87e8\">Juan Varea<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/06\/14\/Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0hadn\u2019t been awarded the Golden Key of Cante in C\u00f3rdoba yet, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Talega-y-Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/56ef6b400cf276e9de24fd1a\">Juan Talega<\/a>, another of Pele\u2019s role models, was barely known by most people. And\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>hadn\u2019t yet won the 1956\u00a0<i>Concurso Nacional de C\u00f3rdoba<\/i>, who turned him into a big star overnight.<\/p>\n<p>El Pele is non-orthodox in\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, although everything he does has its roots in traditional flamenco. He is capable of the best and the worst. He may be amazing in the first part of a recital, and disastrous at the end. Let\u2019s say he may get unpredictable in one single verse, and when this happens he becomes uncontrollable. Something like that happened with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/aquel-genial-nino-de-torres\">Manuel Torres<\/a>, although I don\u2019t mean to compare them. That\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>from Jerez could make a big stir singing one single\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, either because he sang it really well, or because he sang it really bad.<\/p>\n<p>In our days there aren\u2019t many\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0like El Pele. I would even dare to say that he\u2019s one of a kind, the only\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0who is able to drive the public crazy with one single verse of\u00a0<i>soleares<\/i>,\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>buler\u00edas<\/i>, considering his ability to improvise and his brilliant intensity. Many times, I\u2019ve witnesses those qualities that have made him a unique\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I remember one evening when I was with him and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Enrique Morente<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Flamenca Torres Macarena<\/i>, in Seville. Enrique wanted to listen to him singing in private and we ended up at the\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Manolo Caracol<\/i>, in the La Feria district, the birthplace of many important artists. That evening I listened to El Pele in his most inspired state and it\u2019s something I\u2019ll never forget. Enrique whispered to me: \u201cHe\u2019s light-years ahead of everyone else, although he\u2019s crazy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to the\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Flamenca de Paradas<\/i>\u00a0por this choice, and congratulations to this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from C\u00f3rdoba for being granted such great honor.
