I talked to old and young people, but I left the place feeling rather sad. If I had tried to do this in Jerez, in the Santiago, Plazuela or San Miguel districts, or in any of its taverns, I\u2019d have been given a detailed lecture about the places where\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>, La Sarneta, El Chato, Carito,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Terremoto-de-Jerez\/c112t\/569c5f4c0cf224d46570178e\">Terremoto<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/11\/17\/Enrique-Soto-Sordera\">El Sordera<\/a>\u00a0were born and where they lived.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the residents of this part of Seville barely know the flamenco heritage of La Feria, San Juan de la Palma, San Rom\u00e1n, San Roque, San Luis or La Macarena, unaware of the many artists born in this area of Seville and those who lived there in the golden age of this art: Maestro P\u00e9rez, Jos\u00e9 Lorente, El Pintor and his son\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/aquel-malogrado-lamparilla\">Lamparilla<\/a>, Manuel Escacena, El Mochuelo,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s<\/a>, the daughters of El Ciego, Amalia Molina,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/veinte-anos-sin-el-gran-antonio\">Antonio Ruiz<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuel-Vallejo\/c112t\/56eb88420cf29acca8a2292d\">Vallejo<\/a>\u2026 If we go further back in time to the bolero period, we have also Manuel de la Barrera, Manuela Perea\u00a0<i>La Nena<\/i>, Manuel Santa Mar\u00eda, Sartorio el de San Fernando, El Zarcillero\u2026<\/p>\n<p>What has Seville\u2019s City Council done to remedy such deplorable lack of awareness, caused by the endemic apathy of the people in this city? It wouldn\u2019t be a bad idea to create a flamenco research contest, for example. The\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0festival could also promote some production based on flamenco in that part of Seville. I\u2019ve suggested such things dozens of times, and it has all fallen on deaf ears. I\u2019ve done this in a public way, from my media platforms, and also in private, but there\u2019s no way anyone takes this matter seriously.<\/p>\n<p>I remember some conversations I had with the teacher from Seville, Elo\u00edsa Alb\u00e9niz, who was married to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/arturo-pavon-un-cantaor-de-armas-tomar\">Arturo Pav\u00f3n Cruz<\/a>, the elder brother of Pastora and Tom\u00e1s and father of the pianist with the same name. That woman already complained, when she was ninety years old, about how people didn\u2019t care about La Alameda de H\u00e9rcules and the surrounding area. She even asked me in her house to suggest the Spanish women\u2019s magazine\u00a0<i>Diez Minutos<\/i>\u00a0if they would be willing to publish her memoirs.<\/p>\n<p>She was an artist, but soon became a teacher and almost all\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>\u00a0and singers of Seville learned how to sing, dance and present themselves on a stage in her academy at Plaza de la Mata, by La Alameda. She told me that the renowned Spanish popular singer Juanita Reina couldn\u2019t afford paying the lessons, so her mother paid in kind with home-made crochet doilies. She also told me that the guitarist Currito el de la Jeroma (from Jerez but raised in Seville), the guitarist of Ni\u00f1a de los Peines,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/aquel-genial-nino-de-torres\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0and La Macarrona, used to play the piano in her academy, and he was wonderful\u00a0<i>por seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>por soleares<\/i>, and sometimes would accompany Tom\u00e1s singing.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s really sad that all these memories are being lost with the passing of time and we\u2019re doing nothing to prevent it. I\u2019ve tried to help out with my limited resources, publishing the biographies of Pastora, Tom\u00e1s and Escacena, but that\u2019s not enough. Jos\u00e9 Luis Ortiz Nuevo has also done a lot with his researches in the\u00a0<i>Hemeroteca<\/i>. Yet, a lot more needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p>I came inside a store on Relator street, where the famous Lorente was born, and I told an elderly lady there that this singer of\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0was born in that street. I asked her if she knew that already, and I was dumbstruck by her reply: \u201cWasn\u2019t he from Granada?\u201d. She had mixed up Lorente with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Enrique Morente<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Raisin stems are reportedly good to restore the memory. I guess Seville needs some of that.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
