Not everything is learned from the big stars.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/06\/14\/Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0often talked abut the things he had learned from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/aquel-genial-nino-de-torres\">Manuel Torres<\/a>, Joaqu\u00edn el de la Paula,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s<\/a>, but the people from whom he learned the most were the great aficionados from his hometown, as there were lots of them there, when he was a kid. Yet, he barely mentioned them in his memoirs, perhaps because it sounded better to highlight the influence that the aforementioned geniuses had on him.<\/p>\n<p>It was very important for me meeting Ni\u00f1o de Arahal, whose real was Jaime Portillo S\u00e1nchez. We both were originally from the same town, but when I met him, in the 1970s, none of us lived there. He was the one who took me to the now-extinct\u00a0<i>Venta Vega<\/i>\u00a0in Seville to meet other\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0such as Manolo Fregenal, Gordito de Triana, Cepero de Cantillana, Joaqu\u00edn de Utrera and El Peluca, who imitated\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>\u00a0like no other. At that time, guitarists such as Antonio Sanl\u00facar (brother of the great Esteban), Guti\u00e9rrez,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Tomasa-y-Eduardo-de-la-Malena\/c112t\/577f24fc0cf21e6e1ebd7660\">Eduardo el de la Malena<\/a>\u00a0and Pedrito Sevilla would often stop by that\u00a0<i>venta<\/i>\u00a0(if I remember well all their names, because that was over forty years ago). Being able to listen to their performances and talk to them in that place was an incredible learning experience.<\/p>\n<p>It was also essential for me to experience the atmosphere of the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as flamencas<\/i>\u00a0in the different neighborhoods of Seville and in other towns, because in each of them there were great aficionados who sang very well. I now remember Jos\u00e9 Cabello at\u00a0<i>La Fragua de Bellavista<\/i>, who was a true master of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, and also Jos\u00e9 Collantes at\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Juan Talega<\/i>\u00a0in Dos Hermanas, one of the best imitators of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Manolo Caracol<\/a>. They were great singers and I could approach them without any problem to ask them questions or to ask them to sing specific\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>. Without them and many others, I wouldn\u2019t be half the aficionado I\u2019m now, and that\u2019s why I remember them dearly.<\/p>\n<p>I also remember younger\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0whom I followed in contests of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. Fernando G\u00f3ngora, from Sanl\u00facar la Mayor (Seville), Rufo de Santiponce, Itoli de los Palacios, Canela de San Roque, Juan de la Mariana, El Distinguido, Jes\u00fas Carrillo, Jos\u00e9 Parrondo and many others had a great influence on me. I followed them because they were great\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and also because they were much more approachable than the big stars, who came later. Eventually, I learned enough about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0to be able to talk about it with great flamenco stars such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1a-de-la-Puebla\/c112t\/57799c3e0cf2119db9c8edb4\">Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-Paquera-de-Jerez\/c112t\/55f74acd0cf2de902a86840d\">La Paquera<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-y-Juan-Pe%C3%B1a-El-Lebrijano\/c112t\/578855aa0cf28653c964403e\">Lebrijano<\/a>, Mairena,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/09\/08\/Miguel-Vargas\">Miguel Vargas<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That was the way to learn: befriending the artists and finding out from them everything that was necessary to become an acceptable\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0and, above all, a knowledgeable aficionado. Back them people didn\u2019t just learn by listening to records (although I never frowned upon this learning method) or by reading books, because books are only useful if they\u2019re good and if we pick them carefully. The best learning method was, and still is, getting together with the artists, listening to them in their environment and talking to them up close.<\/p>\n<p>I think that nowadays the learning methods are different. I notice many young people follow the great stars, but not so much other great aficionados, particularly the older ones that still exist.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
