{"id":5127,"date":"2018-11-06T18:18:55","date_gmt":"2018-11-06T18:18:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/un-rotundo-ezequiel-benitez\/"},"modified":"2019-02-14T21:58:01","modified_gmt":"2019-02-14T20:58:01","slug":"a-solid-ezequiel-benitez","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/a-solid-ezequiel-benitez\/","title":{"rendered":"A solid Ezequiel Ben\u00edtez"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we talk about the new generation of important\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>, we seldom mention\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/entrevistas-archivos\/ezequiel-benitez-y-sus-recuerd2\">Ezequiel Ben\u00edtez<\/a>, from Jerez, although he\u2019s an established flamenco artist of great quality. Each time I listen to him sing, I remember a conversation I once had with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!So%C3%B1ando-con-El-Chocolate\/c112t\/567771680cf203da56e68612\">Antonio El Chocolate<\/a>, at his house, about traditional\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and innovations. Antonio said that there were some musical forms that were very good just as they were, and performing them with fidelity was as important as creating something new. I totally agree with this opinion from someone who was both faithful to one school of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and also created his own things, such as his\u00a0<i>fandangos<\/i>\u00a0or some twists in\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>soleares<\/i>\u00a0that are still performed.<\/p>\n<p>This master talked about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/arturo-pavon-un-cantaor-de-armas-tomar\">Arturo<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0as his role models, although he used to say that he did everything in his own way. The thing is that Chocolate never imitated anyone, because he was an anarchic\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>. He followed a school, and that\u2019s what Ezequiel Ben\u00edtez does, although I don\u2019t mean to compare them. He\u2019s an excellent copyist, and I\u2019m not saying this because I don\u2019t think he has personality, because he does, but he\u2019s more an interpreter than a creator and his voice is not something new, but a sound readily identifiable as being from of Jerez and Seville. Ezequiel was born and bred in Jerez, but he could also be from Triana or Utrera, because he admires Tom\u00e1s and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuel-Vallejo\/c112t\/56eb88420cf29acca8a2292d\">Vallejo<\/a>\u00a0as much as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/aquel-genial-nino-de-torres\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I\u2019d like to highlight about this great\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0is his extensive knowledge of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, which is not surprising considering that he\u2019s the son of Alfredo Ben\u00edtez, the great aficionado from Jerez, who instilled in Ezequiel a passion for\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0since an early age. I remember one day when I was talking about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0with Alfredo, Diego Alba and Ezequiel, and I was surprised that a teenager had such admiration for Chac\u00f3n, Torres,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>, Tom\u00e1s,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/11\/10\/Antonio-El-Chaqueta\">El Chaqueta<\/a>, Vallejo and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>. It was then, when Ezequiel was 16 years old, when I realized that he would be a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0who would make important things like those two albums,\u00a0<i>Quimeras del tiempo<\/i>, where he showcases his great singing.<\/p>\n<p>In the second volumen of\u00a0<i>Quimeras<\/i>, I fell in love for the first track as soon as I listened to it. It\u2019s a very traditional flamenco version of the buler\u00eda\u00a0<i>Mar\u00eda Magdalena<\/i>, originally by Manuel Vallejo,\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Seville, but with a different kind of voice and timbre. Thus, he sticks to the pattern, but without trying to imitate the voice, achieving a\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0with depth, a very effective\u00a0<i>comp\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0and the deep feeling he adds to everything. Jos\u00e9 de Pura wonderfully accompanies him with the guitar. Ezequiel also adds a lot of feeling to the\u00a0<i>fiesta por buler\u00edas de cierre<\/i>, creating a charming atmosphere together with the guitarist,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Diego-del-Morao-y-El-Pira%C3%B1a\/c112t\/5695885a0cf2e94e3fb4a119\">Diego del Morao<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<i>palmeros<\/i>. That\u2019s his memory of Jerez\u2019s Santiago neighborhood, where\u00a0<i>cante por buler\u00edas<\/i>\u00a0is like nowhere else in Andalusia.<\/p>\n<p>There are very sober\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>\u00a0too, like the\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0dedicated to Mar\u00eda Bala, the\u00a0<i>fandangos por buler\u00eda<\/i>\u00a0of Ni\u00f1o Gloria and the\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0of Chac\u00f3n. There is even a very personal\u00a0<i>guajira<\/i>. It\u2019s a very interesting album, as it evokes the way of singing from an area of Andalusia, Jerez, which, if it wasn\u2019t the birthplace of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, it was where it developed. Ezequiel Ben\u00edtez is a heck of a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0and, although he\u2019s considered important among the new masters, he should be held in higher regard. Particularly for one reason: his respect to the legacy of the masters and the way he performs everything with a lot of love an incredible passion.<\/p>\n<p>Besides Pepe de Pura and Diego del Morao, he\u2019s also accompanied by the guitars of Juan Diego Mateos,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/17\/Gerardo-N%C3%BA%C3%B1ez\">Gerardo N\u00fa\u00f1ez<\/a>, Nono Jero,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Reyes-y-Antonio-Higuero\/c112t\/57a8cc0d0cf2b4e1e13169e3\">Antonio Higuero<\/a>, Javier Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez and Paco Le\u00f3n.
