{"id":5123,"date":"2018-11-08T18:17:43","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T18:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/interpretes-y-creadores\/"},"modified":"2019-04-04T23:07:03","modified_gmt":"2019-04-04T21:07:03","slug":"interpreters-and-creators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/interpreters-and-creators\/","title":{"rendered":"Interpreters and creators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve discussed this topic before, but it doesn\u2019t hurt bringing it up again. I\u2019m referring to good interpreters of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and creators, which are different things. I believe that nowadays there are many good interpreters of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and few creators. What is a good interpreter? In my opinion, it\u2019s someone able to properly perform specific\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>\u00a0and schools. And what\u2019s a creator? It\u2019s someone who composes, that is, a composer, but how many composers are there in today\u2019s\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>? There are many composers for guitar, and in\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0there are excellent choreographers. Yet, in\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0there is not much creativity.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we look down on\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0who properly sing a traditional\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0if they sound too much like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>. However, when an artist is imitated or copied, it can be considered as a way to honor that artist. Here\u2019s a clear example: when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Enrique Morente<\/a>\u00a0produced that album with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/09\/17\/Pepe-Habichuela-en-la-cresta-de-la-ola\">Pepe Habichela<\/a>\u00a0honoring Chac\u00f3n, did he so to take advantage of that genius of Jerez, or as a way to honor him, out of his admiration for that artist? For starters, Morente never tried to copy Chac\u00f3n because, among other things, they had different types of abilities. Rather, Morente attempted to vindicate Chac\u00f3n\u2019s legacy, highlighting what he felt was important and making popular again a\u00a0<i>cantaor <\/i>who had almost been forgotten, either because his discography was not available for modern media and was little-known, or because certain flamenco critics, flamencologists and historians managed to erase his memory from history.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing is created out of thin air. Goya was a creator, but he drew inspiration from Vel\u00e1zquez and other previous artists.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Paco-de-Lucia-Light-and-Shade\/c112t\/55f74ed90cf20cc524a8ee8e\">Paco de Luc\u00eda<\/a>\u00a0was a genius with an ability to create which revolutionized flamenco guitar, but it\u2019s undeniable that he was influenced by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1o-Ricardo\/c112t\/569584120cf2e099256bbfdd\">Ni\u00f1o Ricardo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sabicas-Recital-de-Guitarra-Flamenca\/c112t\/55f748230cf24af6ea3c1d07\">Sabicas<\/a>\u00a0or his own brother Ram\u00f3n, who was the bridge who took Paco to Ricardo. Talking with Paco one day about his masters, he told me that he had also learned a lot of things from anonymous guitarists that he had met in parties or on the street. Thus, that genius from Algeciras didn\u2019t \u201ctake advantage\u201d of those masters, but rather honored them by using them as inspiration for his albums <em>Fuente y caudal<\/em> or <em>Siroco<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Those who imitate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a> also honor him, although in some cases (and I won\u2019t name names) they dishonor him, because they just make a crude imitation instead of a good re-interpretation of his style. And, of course, they don\u2019t know the essence of his works. Has anyone carefully studied Camar\u00f3n\u2019s legacy, thoroughly analyzing it and giving it a different perspective, like Goya did with Vel\u00e1zquez, Morente with Chac\u00f3n or Paco de Luc\u00eda with Ricardo and Sabicas? No, nobody has done it. Thus, instead of extolling his style and vindicating his works, what they\u2019ve done is devaluating his style and his works.<\/p>\n<p>Definitely, it\u2019s time to be clear that those who properly perform existing, traditional music are as important as those who compose new things. Both do essentially the same, although with some differences. There are not as many copyists as we think, or as many innovators. Every\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0that is performed honors a previous artist.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Definitely, it\u2019s time to be clear that those who properly perform existing, traditional music are as important as those who compose new things.
