I particularly like those who are able to evoke the flavor of their region\u2019s landscape, which is how\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/06\/14\/Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0defined \u201cpurity\u201d. When that great master talked about the\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1 of Alcal\u00e1<\/i>, one of his favorites\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1s<\/i>, he used to say that he liked those\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>\u00a0who evoked the aromas of freshly baked bread and the flowers near the old Arabic castle of Alcal\u00e1, where Joaqu\u00edn el de la Paula and his nephew Manolito el de Mar\u00eda lived.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/10\/Fernando-el-de-Triana\">Fernando el de Triana<\/a>\u00a0thought likewise when he wrote about the\u00a0<i>fandangos de Alosno<\/i>\u00a0in his book, making it clear that they should have the aroma of that landscape of rockroses and moonshine. Well, in\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0it\u2019s the same. When I saw Rafael el Negro, Juan Montoya or Pastora la del Pati dance, I could feel in my mouth the taste of fried mullet and marinated barbel. They danced naturally, as they had learned from their parents and grandparents in the neighborhood parties of Triana\u2019s Cava Nueva.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I like the\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Pepe-Torres\/c112t\/5750eb5f0cf24c96159fb01f\">Pepe Torres<\/a>, from Mor\u00f3n de la Frontera, grandson of one of my favourite\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Joselero-de-Mor%C3%B3n\/c112t\/5750eeb70cf231679147ff6b\">Joselero de Mor\u00f3n<\/a>. Because even if I saw Pepe dancing in New York, I\u2019d feel transported to his hometown and I\u2019d have in my throat the unmistakable taste of collard greens and\u00a0<i>sopeao<\/i>\u00a0(a thick gazpacho typical of those parts). I\u2019d also remember his grandfather, his brother-in-law\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/55f7536a0cf2db6dcfb5bdd2\">Diego del Gastor<\/a>\u00a0and Pepe R\u00edos, who had the most Gypsy way of dancing in that part of Seville province. Because, indeed, Pepe\u2019s\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0has the aroma and flavor of the landscape of Mor\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>How come Pepe Torres doesn\u2019t have more renown as a\u00a0<i>bailaor<\/i>, being so good and so natural? For the same reason that\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0in older days didn\u2019t achieve great fame: traditional\u00a0<i>baile flamenco<\/i>, without influences from other dance genres, has always been enjoyed by just a minority. Isn\u2019t this a contradiction, though? If we like and consume what is good, be it ham, wine or seafood, why not\u00a0<i>baile flamenco<\/i>? Yet, the fact is that Pepe Torres is not the most in-demand or the most respected\u00a0<i>bailaor<\/i>, if you didn\u2019t know this already.<\/p>\n<p>Besides dancing in the purest flamenco (or Gypsy) style, Pepe is a good guitar player and even sings. That is, he\u2019s a heck of an artist, a man with the gift of art, without forced tricks of technique, without\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/un-detector-de-ojana\"><i>ojana<\/i><\/a>. As a\u00a0<i>bailaor<\/i>\u00a0and as a person, he possesses an admirable sincerity. His\u00a0<i>baile por buler\u00edas<\/i>\u00a0is purely Gypsy, like no other. Perhaps it\u2019s a bit like the baile of Pepe R\u00edos,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Farruco\/c112t\/566e47370cf2bbe8cab82498\">Farruco<\/a>\u00a0or his uncle El Andorrano, the ones who influenced his art.<\/p>\n<p>By highlighting Pepe Torres, his style and his art, I don\u2019t mean to say that this is what is worth and everything else is worthless. No, that\u2019s not my point. I\u2019m just trying to highlight a\u00a0<i>bailaor<\/i>\u00a0and a way to dance that I like and which should be more conspicuous in national and international flamenco programs because it\u2019s a cultural treasure.
