I hate when people call her \u201c<i>cantaora<\/i>\u201d, because she isn\u2019t one, even as she\u2019s been trying to portray herself as such since the start of her career. Frankly (and I\u2019ll try to be as sincere as I can) I like that a singer of trap and pop uses elements of flamenco in an album, in her music, which incidentally is a natural thing, because flamenco is the quintessential Spanish music. Her success has been impressive, and I\u2019ve read nonsense such as \u201cthis is the best moment in flamenco\u201d or that she has \u201crevolutionized\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u201d. Some people have even compared her with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Vallejo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is what annoys me, not even as a flamenco critic, but as a flamenco aficionado. As a flamenco critic, I\u2019m not interested in her. Besides, I dislike her voice, because she pretends having a flamenco sense while she never experienced being in a flamenco environment and frankly, her\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0comes out unnatural. Eventually she\u2019ll learn how to sing\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0in a more natural way, but the fact is that she doesn\u2019t has the strength to handle\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. Yes, strength, because a strong voice is something necessary for\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and her voice is too wobbly, lacking stamina. So, how come she has been so successful? She must have something special, of course, because a marketing campaign alone doesn\u2019t make a star. Just see what has become of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Estrella-Morente-Tangos-del-Cerro\/c112t\/55f780ac0cf2de902a86ab99\">Estrella Morente<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Pitingo\/c112t\/573e61960cf2a9c30e5caaab\">Pitingo<\/a>. They are not bad artists, and are rather good singers, but they too were said to be making a revolution in flamenco.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe White Camar\u00f3n\u201d was how F\u00e9lix Grande called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%BFEs-Miguel-Poveda-un-cantaor-discutido\/c112t\/56aaefe60cf205a1e853fbda\">Miguel Poveda<\/a>\u00a0in 1993, when he was awarded the\u00a0<i>L\u00e1mpara Minera<\/i>\u00a0prize in La Uni\u00f3n, and yet he ended up becoming a singer of flamenco-ish pop songs. I know that someone will point out that Poveda also sings traditional flamenco very well. So what? Does anyone pay 70 euros to listen this singer from Catalunya sing\u00a0<i>soleares<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>? He didn\u2019t revolutionize flamenco at all, just like Estrella Morente or Pintingo didn\u2019t, either. One thing is to be a successful artist, quite another is to revolutionize an art form. Rosal\u00eda is, at this point in time, a successful artist, having achieved unprecedent success at such young age in such a short time. Yet, claiming that she\u2019s revolutionizing\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0is quite a stretch. Let\u2019s be serious.<\/p>\n<p>Before she released\u00a0<i>El Mal Querer<\/i>, the album that has given her so much fame, that is, before she was so well-known, she was interviewed in leading newspapers as if she was revolutionizing flamenco. When I listened to her singing in videos, I\u2019d tell myself \u201cshe can\u2019t possibly be any worse singing flamenco!\u201d. Seriously, she was 23 years old back then, and she wasn\u2019t even able to properly finish any\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, due to her lack of strength and poor technique. So, how come leading Spanish newspapers such as El Pa\u00eds or El Mundo would claim that she was revolutionizing flamenco?<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that in flamenco we miss the geniuses we had twenty or thirty years ago, and there is none nowadays. So, we\u2019re eager to find a new artist who will move flamenco forward, revolutionizing it. However, do you really think that this new genius is Rosal\u00eda? Weren\u2019t\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Mayte-Mart%C3%ADn-desconcertante-y-libre\/c112t\/5624632a0cf2c6c6437c0ce8\">Mayte Mart\u00edn<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/03\/30\/Roc%C3%ADo-M%C3%A1rquez-se-pira-del-cante\">Roc\u00edo M\u00e1rquez<\/a>\u00a0or La Tremendita the ones supposed to revolutionize flamenco? You\u2019ll see, then, that people won\u2019t stop talking about Rosal\u00eda from now on, because she\u2019s the new thing, even if just for a couple of years. The big media companies needed a new whiz kid, a new voice, in order to make money and they found it in the catchy, pretty girl from Barcelona. They have her and they\u2019ll exploit her until someone else comes along.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m amazed, even ashamed, by the fact that even flamenco critics and flamencologists whom I considered serious professionals have now become part of Rosal\u00eda\u2019s fan club. I\u2019ve even stopped following some of them in the social networks because it was something overwhelming and even hurtful.<\/p>\n<p>The world of music is doing great, fair enough. People are all happy, and that\u2019s great.
