An art form, a musical genre, which has been performed in public for over two centuries and has existed for even longer, so it\u2019s hard to conceive that there are young people in Spain who have never heard of flamenco, and if that were the case, it would be because they have other interests, such as sports or martial arts.<\/p>\n<p>I myself became interested in flamenco due to artists other than\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Talega-y-Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/56ef6b400cf276e9de24fd1a\">Juan Talega<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/08\/31\/La-Perrata\">La Perrata<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/06\/14\/Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Tio-Borrico-de-Jerez\/c112t\/56bd4ba90cf2fd311ce03c4f\">El Borrico de Jerez<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Tia-Anica-La-Piri%C3%B1aca\/c112t\/55f752400cf24af6ea3c235e\">La Peri\u00f1aca<\/a>. I was hooked by younger artists such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/07\/23\/El-Turronero\">Turronero<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-nueva-ilusi%C3%B3n-de-Chiquetete\/c112t\/564558210cf21009be84d126\">Chiquetete<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/07\/23\/El-Chozas-de-Sevilla\">El Chozas de Sevilla<\/a>, not by the pop-rumbas of Manolo Escobar or Peret. Later, I learned to admire the above-mentioned masters of traditional flamenco, the so-called \u201cpures\u201d or \u201c<i>rancios<\/i>\u201d (\u201cgrouches\u201d) and I became a die-hard fan of Mairena. Later on, as many readers know, I became a dissenter of\u00a0<i>mairenismo<\/i>, but I\u2019ll write about that another day, because the Christmas season is upon us and we all yearn for peace.<\/p>\n<p>How many young people did Camar\u00f3n hook into flamenco in the 70s and 80s? Tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands. Yet, Camar\u00f3n wasn\u2019t just a singer who aspired to become a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, but a kid who was born with the gifts of\u00a0<i>pellizco<\/i>,\u00a0<i>jondura<\/i>,\u00a0<i>comp\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0and emotion. There are recordings of this genius when he was just a teenager and it was something that would have made\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/the-brilliant-nino-de-torres\/\">Manuel Torres<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juanito-Mojama-%C2%BFredescubriendo-a-un-genio\/c112t\/5600abed0cf25fa7fe12dd39\">Juan Mojama<\/a>\u00a0and El Gloria proud. Camar\u00f3n was a true revolutionary of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, not one made up by national newspapers and radio stations. The same goes for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Paco-de-Lucia-Light-and-Shade\/c112t\/55f74ed90cf20cc524a8ee8e\">Paco de Luc\u00eda<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-soledad-de-Manolo-Sanl%C3%BAcar\/c112t\/566a47510cf2391068765f14\">Manolo Sanl\u00facar<\/a>\u00a0in flamenco guitar or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Farruco\/c112t\/566e47370cf2bbe8cab82498\">Farruco<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Siete-a%C3%B1os-sin-Mario-Maya\/c112t\/5604c1250cf2375d99dbfea0\">Mario Maya<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Is it really necessary to have a pop or rock singer in flamenco to create a revolution? Apparently, no.<\/p>\n<p>It seems as if we\u2019re waiting for some alien to come and fix flamenco, as if what we already have was worthless. As if the treasure that is the legacy of the great masters, which should be eternal, wasn\u2019t worth anything, either. In my opinion,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/09\/25\/Isabelita-de-Jerez-una-joya-gitana\">Isabelita de Jerez<\/a>\u00a0are still modern and are also very important role models for new artists. There is no need for a pop artists to sing flamenco-ish songs in order to make the young people of Andalusia interested in flamenco.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t care less about the fact that\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>\u00a0is not mainstream, as some people wish. Is not enough filling theaters and summer festivals with flamenco aficionados? Apparently, it\u2019s not enough. It seems like we must now fill stadiums and wide-open fairgrounds. It also seems like we have to compete with all mainstream genres from all over the world. If we keep this mindset, in twenty of thirty years no one will want to listen to a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0accompanied by a flamenco guitar, which is the best way to enjoy true\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, until proven otherwise.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
