According to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-de-Huelva\/c112t\/577346eb0cf231749dc9d199\">Manolo de Huelva<\/a>\u00a0and many other flamenco experts, the\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0with the best singing technique were\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Antonio Chac\u00f3n<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>, at least in those days. Does that mean they didn\u2019t have\u00a0<i>duende<\/i>? I don\u2019t thing so. Although\u00a0<i>duende<\/i>\u00a0is something very subjective, Chac\u00f3n\u2019s\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0immediately gets into my heart and soul whenever I listen to his recordings. Perhaps that\u2019s because I like well-executed\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and this master from Jerez was the best of them all, at least among those who made recordings in his time. If we listen to other\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0of that period, we\u2019ll notice the big difference between Chac\u00f3n and everyone else. No to mention Tom\u00e1s. Only\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/the-brilliant-nino-de-torres\/\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0(who was one of his teachers), and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juanito-Mojama-%C2%BFredescubriendo-a-un-genio\/c112t\/5600abed0cf25fa7fe12dd39\">Juan Mojama<\/a>\u00a0could match the singing quality of the younger brother of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not only technique is compatible with art, but technique is an art in itself, or a way to make art. When we highlight the art of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!So%C3%B1ando-con-El-Chocolate\/c112t\/567771680cf203da56e68612\">Antonio el Chocolate<\/a>, we often forget that he had a great technique, too, just like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/06\/14\/Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>. I talked a lot about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0with Chocolate and he was clear that he wasn\u2019t just an inspired singer, a\u00a0<i>cantaor de pellizco<\/i>. \u201cI sing with inspiration, with\u00a0<i>pellizco<\/i>, but I have a proper breathing technique and I put the verses in the right places\u201d, he told me in one occasion when I interviewed him. He accepted his anarchy as a virtue and not as a defect, what shows that he was much more intelligent than people think. He wasn\u2019t as raw. What happens is that he had many hard life experiences since his childhood, when he joined\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/11\/13\/El-Bizco-Amate\">Bizco Amate<\/a>\u00a0singing along the tenement yards hoping to get some coins thrown from the windows and balconies.<\/p>\n<p>In one of these occasions when they sang and begged for coins, the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0Pepe Aznalc\u00f3llar was in a balcony and Bizco told him: \u201cPepe, toss me a peseta, come on!\u201d. Aznalc\u00f3llar was a joker and he told him that he would not, because \u201cthe wind will carry it away\u201d. Bizco, in a momento of brilliance and, certainly, frustration too, replied: \u201cToss it inside a bread roll, then!\u201d. Chocolate experienced those things and his\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>couldn\u2019t possibly be like that of an opera singer raised comfortably in a good home. He sang in the same way he had lived. Let\u2019s remember the answer of Manolito el de Mar\u00eda, the Gypsy\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Alcal\u00e1, when asked why he sang the way he sang: \u201cBecause I remember all the things I\u2019ve been through\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The other day I listened to Manuel de la Tomasa sing at Pe\u00f1a Torres Macarena, in Seville, and in some moments, I was greatly moved as he sang\u00a0<i>por seguiriyas<\/i>. Yet, Manuel grew up without experiencing any deprivation or major suffering and was raised by excellent parents. His only defining life experiences would been those he had at his home, but there was a moment when he conveyed great suffering as he sang, and we could feel his\u00a0<i>pellizco<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>jondura<\/i>, that emotion unique in\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>, because if it doesn\u2019t touches our hearts is not\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>. Manuel has a good, natural technique, and moments of\u00a0<i>duende<\/i>\u00a0that are so necessary in an art so communicative and heartfelt as flamenco.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
