He was a child prodigy of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, born on Fabi\u00e9 street in Triana, near Altozano square, Pureza street (formerly known as Larga street) and Betis street (formerly known as Orilla del R\u00edo). Naranjo was a full-blooded\u00a0<i>trianero<\/i>. Without any doubt, he was the most important\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0to come out of Triana, because he was a big star of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and gave Triana more renown than anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>He was born in 1933, a year that often comes up in flamenco history, because it was the year when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/the-brilliant-nino-de-torres\/\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0and Joaqu\u00edn el de la Paula passed away, to mention just two famous\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>. It was also the year when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0married\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/sevilla-forgot-about-pepe-pinto\/\">Pepe Pinto<\/a>\u00a0(also a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>) at the Basilica of La Macarena. At that time,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>, Escacena, El Portugu\u00e9s and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/el-medico-del-cante-jondo\/\">Ram\u00f3n el Ollero<\/a>\u00a0had already died, City Council had demolished the Caf\u00e9 Novedades and the big names in\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0were Ni\u00f1a de los Peines,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Manuel Vallejo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Ni\u00f1o de Marchena<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Manolo Caracol<\/a>, among other renowned artists.<\/p>\n<p>Naranjito ended his days bitter about flamenco. Rather, bitter about the flamenco world. He visited me many times in my house in Triana (I should say \u2018the house I lived in\u2019, instead) and we talked a lot about this topic. He felt that people didn\u2019t acknowledge his worth, despite his long career and his great quality as\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>. He felt very hurt about this, because he was very smart and knew what that meant. One morning he told me this, in my house:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>I\u2019ve seen great cantaores of Seville to die forgotten, and I don\u2019t want to be one of them. Vallejo himself died alone and very much forgotten. I don\u2019t mean alone as a person, because he never married, but alone as a cantaor. And he was so great, my God. Sometimes I\u2019d seen him at La Alameda, sitting by a table and he would barely have money for one coffee. He would stop by Las Maravillas, on the corner of Trajano street, across Realito\u2019s academy, shrunk like a raisin. I\u2019d ask him things about cante and he\u2019d barely bother to answer. I think he felt disgusted.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naranjo didn\u2019t end like that because he made a lot of money and, unlike Vallejo, he took good care of his earnings. He retired from\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0because he felt like it, and he did it in style, singing at the Maestranza theater with the best guitarists of that time. He packed the coliseum at Paseo de Col\u00f3n and left with a bang. No one could understand why a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0in full control of his faculties, with an impeccable voice and a good head on his shoulders would retire from\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. Part of the reason was that he was sick and tired of the flamenco world and of some critics who even offended him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>I don\u2019t understand some critics, Manolo. I get a standing ovation at five in the morning in a festival, but in the newspaper review they put the picture of artists who made people get up and head to the bar as soon as they got on stage. Those things burn me out.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today is not the anniversary of his birth, or of his death. I just though of him yesterday and I felt like writing about someone who was a great friend and whom I admired and still admire as a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0and as a person.
