This already happened in the house parties of the 1800s.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Yet, the\u00a0<i>campanilleros<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>villancicos<\/i>\u00a0styles were not part of the repertoire of flamenco artists back then, right?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Other styles weren\u2019t part of their repertoire, either, but they became flamenco-ish after\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>\u00a0started singing them. That\u2019s the case of the\u00a0<i>mariana<\/i>, for example. And\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/the-brilliant-nino-de-torres\/\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0sang popular\u00a0<i>campanilleros<\/i>\u00a0in his very unique way with such brilliance that nowadays\u00a0<i>campanilleros<\/i>r are acknowledged as a flamenco\u00a0<i>palo<\/i>\u00a0like any other.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/sevilla-forgot-about-pepe-pinto\/\">Pinto<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>\u00a0did the same with the\u00a0<i>bambera<\/i>, a style which originally belonged to Andalusian folklore and is commonly sang in virtually all towns in Andalusia. These are the\u00a0<i>cantes de bambas<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>cantes de columpio<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Where does Christmas have the greatest flamenco feel, grandpa?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Without any doubt, in Jerez de la Frontera. That\u2019s where El Gloria recorded for posterity those\u00a0<i>villancicos por buler\u00edas<\/i>\u00a0of his. I remember one Christmas Eve I spent in Jerez, in the house of a friend who already passed away, Antonio Delgado Zurita, when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/06\/14\/Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0sung\u00a0<i>villancicos por tangos<\/i>, which were absolutely brilliant. I don\u2019t know if that was ever recorded, but even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Tio-Borrico-de-Jerez\/c112t\/56bd4ba90cf2fd311ce03c4f\">T\u00edo Borrico<\/a>\u00a0was moved.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Are people pushing it, with the\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/articles\/after-remembering-the-dead-come-the-non-zambombas-of-jerez\/?locale=es\"><b><i>zambombas<\/i><\/b><\/a><b>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-No doubt about it, but the thing is that they\u2019re great, and there\u2019s a whole business around them. If they keep on it, we\u2019ll be having\u00a0<i>zambombas<\/i>\u00a0well into spring (maybe this happens already), and that would really be too much. Yet, these celebrations are essential, and there\u2019re lots of them because they\u2019re in high demand. You have no idea how many people go to Jerez every year to experience a good\u00a0<i>zambomba<\/i>, because they\u2019re very\u00a0<i>flamencas<\/i>. Everything in Jerez is very\u00a0<i>flamenco<\/i>, and Christmas is no exception.<\/p>\n<p><b>-What about Seville?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-In Seville, almost all traditions are disappearing. When I was very young, Christmas songs were sung in every tavern in Triana, and other towns such as Utrera, Mairena o Alcal\u00e1 had a great Christmas atmosphere. In Palomares there were always street choirs cheering the frigid nights, but frankly I don\u2019t know if that still happens.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Do you have any favorite\u00a0<i>villancico<\/i>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-The\u00a0<i>campanilleros<\/i>\u00a0of Corruco de Algeciras are a treasure. We always mention those of Manuel Torres or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1a-de-la-Puebla\/c112t\/57799c3e0cf2119db9c8edb4\">Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla<\/a>, but this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from L\u00ednea de la Concepci\u00f3n left us a very good version:<\/p>\n<p><i>En sus brazos llevaba Mar\u00eda<br \/>\nal Rey de los Cielos huyendo a Bel\u00e9n\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">[In her arms Mary carried<br \/>\nThe King of Heavens, fleeing Bethlehem]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
