Thus, his passing away last Sunday, December 16<sup>th<\/sup>, made me feel very sad, because he was really important for me in my early days as a flamenco aficionado. I even used to sing his songs, when I was considering to become a cantaor. <strong>Chiquetete, Camar\u00f3n, El Chozas, Lebrijano <\/strong>and<strong> Morente<\/strong>, among others like <strong>Turronero <\/strong>and <strong>Gabriel Moreno<\/strong>, were my idols of <em>cante<\/em>. Yet, Antonio Chiquetete was not just one <em>cantaor<\/em> I liked, but an artist whom I\u2019d follow in the flamenco festivals of Andalusia. As time went by and he strayed into more commercial music, I lost my interest in him. It\u2019s not that I disliked the new music he performed, but my taste in flamenco had evolved and I became more interested in artists like <strong>Mairena, La Paquera, Menese, Fosforito, Agujetas <\/strong>or<strong> Miguel Vargas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Chiquete was among the greatest, yet he never quite managed to establish himself in <em>cante jondo<\/em> at a time with so many big flamenco stars. The fact is that it was hard to stand out among so many great artists, and he drifted into commercial music because it wasn\u2019t easy to compete with <strong>Lebrijano, Camar\u00f3n, Pansequito <\/strong>and<strong> Morente<\/strong>. It wasn\u2019t for lack of talent of skill, as he was quite good in some <em>palos<\/em> (particularly in the <em>palos festeros<\/em>), but because he lacked j<em>ondura<\/em>, or \u201cflamenco depth\u201d, something that cannot be learned in any school, but is a gift present from birth, as was the case of <strong>Caracol, El Chaqueta, Antonio Mairena, Juan Talega, Manuel Agujetas, Chocolate <\/strong>or<strong> Ni\u00f1a de los Peines.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Antonio stopped speaking to me for years as a result of a scathing review I wrote about his performance in the 1996 <em>Bienal<\/em>, which I titled \u201c<em>Confunden el Maestranza con la Caseta de Feria de Ecovol<\/em>\u201c (roughly translated as \u201c<em>Maestranza Theater mixed up with Supermarket Booth<\/em>\u201d). His performance in that festival of Seville was so terrible that I had to tell it like it was. Yet, one day, many years later, we happened to attend the same party at El Roc\u00edo, and he approached me to shake my hand, which goes to show how noble he was. Antonio was noble, a good person, and as an artist we\u2019re not just discovering him now, after he passed away. He was one of the greatest, without a doubt, both in <em>cante flamenco<\/em> and in Spanish popular music.<\/p>\n<p>I remember him singing at the <em>tablao<\/em> <strong>La Trocha<\/strong>, in Seville, before he became famous. He already had a great personality singing for <em>baile<\/em>, where he was renowned before he started performing as a soloist and not as part of a <em>cuadro<\/em>. He didn\u2019t even earn one thousand pesetas (roughly ten euros) per evening back then, when some other <em>cantaores<\/em> of his generations were earning one hundred thousand pesetas (about one thousand euros) in the town\u2019s summer festivals. Thus, the representative <strong>Pulp\u00f3n<\/strong> added him to his list of artists, and when Chiquetete started performing in flamenco festivals it was like a breath of fresh air. Except for the most die-hard flamenco <em>puristas<\/em>, who didn\u2019t approve of his participation in the most traditional flamenco festivals.<\/p>\n<p>None of that prevented this <em>cantaor<\/em> from Triana to succeed as one of the great stars of <em>cante<\/em> in those days. He\u2019s already part of flamenco history and it will be hard to forget such a unique and beautiful voice<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
