{"id":5007,"date":"2019-01-24T14:29:50","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T13:29:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/%e2%80%8bel-cuento-de-los-innovadores\/"},"modified":"2019-02-10T11:13:53","modified_gmt":"2019-02-10T10:13:53","slug":"the-tale-of-innovators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/the-tale-of-innovators\/","title":{"rendered":"The tale of innovators"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>Ever since my early days in flamenco, over forty years ago, I\u2019ve always been hearing aficionados saying the same things about what is flamenco and what isn\u2019t: a\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0must sound like a\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>, in a specific way; flamenco is not just any music; rules are rules, they exist for a reason; and, among other things, everything has already been created and invented. The latter sounds absurd to me, complete nonsense, because in art nothing is final. Not at all.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, it\u2019s true that flamenco\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>\u00a0were defined and established at one point in time, in a long process of evolution which lasted many years, and if someone is singing\u00a0<i>por sole\u00e1<\/i>, they must do so in a specific measure of rhythm which has already been created, and if that\u2019s not strictly followed, then what\u2019s being sung is not a\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>. We can apply the same reasoning to a simple\u00a0<i>sevillana<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The other day while I was driving, I listened on the radio someone singing something which sounded like a\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0, but was very strange, and since the host didn\u2019t have a clue about flamenco, he said that the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>singing was an \u201cinnovator\u201d. I tried to take the measure of that\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0but it was impossible, because it didn\u2019t followed a twelve-beat\u00a0<i>comp\u00e1s<\/i>, So it was some sort of nonsensical\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0and, according to Lorca, the\u00a0<i>palo<\/i>with a rhythm that doesn\u2019t make any sense isn\u2019t the\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>, but the\u00a0<i>seguiriya<\/i>. \u201c<i>Where are you going, seguiriya, with your senseless rhythm?<\/i>\u201d, wrote that genius from Fuente Vaqueros.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a long time since I last paid any attention to one of these so-called flamenco \u201cinnovators\u201d of our days. I prefer\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0who know how to sing\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, and I ask for nothing else. Well, as long as it\u2019s made with good taste and\u00a0<i>duende<\/i>. That\u2019s the main thing. Because behind this \u201cinnovation\u201d thing there\u2019s a lot of mediocrity, and a lot of money is wasted sponsoring with public money the inventions of artists who are only able to get the aficionados\u2019 attention when they claim to take something wonderful and new (an \u201cabsolute premiere\u201d, like they call it) to the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0or to the\u00a0<i>Festival de Jerez<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Now we can expect a change in the cultural policy of the Andalusian government, or at least that\u2019s a possibility, due to the recent political changes, and I hope that the way subsidies are handed out changes, too. All artists have the right to government subsidies, but not the artists who are launched by the Junta de Andaluc\u00eda just because they proclaim themselves as creators or innovators. They don\u2019t really care, all they want is to have some fun.<\/p>\n<p>If anyone creates some invention, something new, before anyone buys it, it must be proved that it\u2019s indeed a new invention. Well, then, whoever comes up with a flamenco show that\u2019s amazing, never- seen-before, innovative and revolutionary, should get a loan from the bank, premiere their show in a theater, and if it\u2019s really that good, then they can then ask for government subsidies to take that show on tour. I\u2019ve seen so much money wasted at the Bienal with those so-called \u201cabsolute premieres\u201d, which then turn out not really being premieres and go nowhere, that I\u2019ve asked myself a logical question: doesn\u2019t anyone watches these things before adding them to the festival\u2019s program?<\/p>\n<p>Many years ago, the Bienal spent thirty million pesetas in a production of Enrique Morente which was presented at the Maestranza Theater, and we never heard about that production ever again. And yet, Morente was a certified innovator, as we can attest by his important discography.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
