{"id":39187,"date":"2023-01-26T22:15:39","date_gmt":"2023-01-26T21:15:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=39187"},"modified":"2023-01-26T22:54:26","modified_gmt":"2023-01-26T21:54:26","slug":"nino-gloria-in-seville","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/nino-gloria-in-seville\/","title":{"rendered":"Ni\u00f1o Gloria in Seville"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Rafael Ramos Ant\u00fanez&nbsp;<\/strong><em><strong>El Gloria<\/strong><\/em> was one of the greatest cantaores from Jerez, but perhaps has never been honored in his hometown as much he deserved. He died in Seville, in the most abject poverty, on February 11<sup>th<\/sup>, 1954, on 9 Divina Pastora Street (formerly known as Alcal\u00e1 Street), which happens to be the birthplace of the great bailaor <strong>Lamparilla<\/strong>, son of another famous bailaor from Seville, <strong>Antonio el Pintor<\/strong>. Shortly before his death, El Gloria just managed to make a living selling snacks in the La Feria, San Juan de la Palma and Alameda de H\u00e9rcules districts of Seville. It was an unfair end for someone who had been idolized in Seville for his singing of saetas, fandangos and buler\u00edas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>El Gloria used to go fishing with <strong>Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Pepe Torres<\/strong> and occasionally would be seen having a drink with <strong>La<\/strong> <strong>Moreno de Jerez<\/strong> at caf\u00e9 <strong>La Europa, Las Siete Puertas<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>Las Maravillas<\/strong>.&nbsp;Nowadays, when walking by the San Lorenzo Square or by La Campana Street in Seville, I can almost hear his voice coming from a balcony on Sierpes Street, cheered by <strong>Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, Paco Mazaco<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Manolo Caracol<\/strong>. Oh, those stellar saetas of Ni\u00f1o Gloria! The poet <strong>Joaqu\u00edn Romero Murube<\/strong> would say that Gloria seemed to melt the iron bars of his balcony with his tight grasp, when singing saetas during the processions of Macarena or Gran Poder.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This master from Jerez arrived in Seville in the 1910s, joined by his mother and two sisters, <strong>Luisa&nbsp;<\/strong><em><strong>La Pompi<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Manuela&nbsp;<em>La Sorda<\/em><\/strong>, both great artists in their own right, particularly Luisa, another great cantaora who has almost been forgotten in Seville. Manuela was not as famous, but it is said that she also sang saetas like his brother, although she was more eccentric. She even rivaled <strong>La Finito<\/strong>&nbsp;and Mazaco in saetas, but unlike her siblings, she greatly missed Jerez, and would go back to her hometown often.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Being a nephew of cantaor Francisco Fern\u00e1ndez Ramos, <em><strong>T\u00edo Cabezas<\/strong><\/em>, Ni\u00f1o Gloria was born in Jerez on April 27, 1893, on Nueva Street (Santiago district). He learned his trade as flamenco cantaor in the same way as many other artists from Jerez: in family reunions, in the country fields and in neighborhood parties. He never planned to become an artist, perhaps because he knew how most flamenco artists of his day ended up: poor and forgotten. He was a good field laborer, much in demand in the lands around Jerez and El Cuervo, and he would only sing for his friends. But he caused an uproar whenever he sang villancicos or buler\u00edas, and that encouraged him to try his luck in Seville, where soon after arriving he started performing at <strong>La Vin\u00edcola<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>El Pasaje Sevillano<\/strong>&nbsp;together with stars such as <strong>Manuel Torres<\/strong>, \u2014 also from Jerez \u2014 Manuel\u2019s son <strong>Tom\u00e1s<\/strong>, guitarist&nbsp;<strong>Manolo de Huelva<\/strong>&nbsp;and bailaora&nbsp;<strong>La Malena<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abIt\u2019s not possible to have the same duende in the morning and at night, or while feeling hungry and while not feeling hungry\u00bb (Ni\u00f1o Gloria)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Regarding his personality, Rafael was reportedly good-natured, cheerful and formal. He had some strange personal theories about cante. One day someone asked him about rhythm (<em>comp\u00e1s<\/em>), and he replied that it was like riding a horse without hurting your bum. \u201cIt\u2019s all about coordination\u201d, he said. About duende, he said that it was like a mood. \u201cIt\u2019s not possible to have the same duende in the morning and at night, or while feeling hungry and while not feeling hungry\u201d. Quite a character.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Reportedly he sang for dancing (\u201c<em>para bailar<\/em>\u201d) like no other, and that is why bailaora <strong>La Argentinita<\/strong>&nbsp;hired him for her iconic show <em>Las calles de C\u00e1diz<\/em>, without a doubt by recommendation of one of his greatest admirers, the bullfighter <strong>Ignacio S\u00e1nchez Mej\u00edas<\/strong>. El Gloria was much sought-after by the best bailaoras of his time, due to his sense of rhythm and his piercing voice. He was \u201cjust fire\u201d, in the words of bailaora <strong>La Macarrona<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rafael was a key element in the settling of flamenco artists from Jerez in Seville, creating as school of saetas, buler\u00edas and fandangos that still exist. It is not easy to sing in the style of El Gloria, but great masters such as <strong>Naranjito<\/strong>, <strong>Mairena<\/strong> and <strong>Camar\u00f3n<\/strong> have succeeded in emulating him in palos such as fandangos, saetas and buler\u00edas \u2014 both the \u201c<em>corta<\/em>\u201d and the \u201c<em>para escuch\u00e1<\/em>\u201d varieties.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
