Last Thursday, May 6th<\/sup>, was a very important day for flamenco, because Seville\u2019s Cajasol Theater, in the city center, finally hosted Tesela<\/a>\u2018s presentation of the documentary Mujer, gitana y reina del cante<\/strong><\/em>, (\u2018Woman, Gypsy and Queen of Cante\u2019<\/em>), about the life and career of the celebrated cantaora<\/em> Pastora Pav\u00f3n Cruz, Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/strong><\/em>, without a doubt the most influential and renowned cantaora<\/em> in flamenco\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

The screening of the 90-minute documentary took place with a limited audience of about eighty people, attended by Susana Cayuelas<\/strong> \u2014 territorial deputy of Seville\u2019s department of Development, Culture and Heritage \u2014 and by flamenco aficionados and critics. Directed by Pedro Callejas<\/strong>, it features renowned critics, flamencologists, aficionados and artists showering praises on this great artist born on February 10th<\/sup>, 1890 in Seville\u2019s San Roman district to a humble family with roots in other provincial towns such as El Viso del Alcor and Arahal. <\/p>\n

\u00abThe documentary features the commentaries of renowned artists and experts on Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, as well as an extensive graphic material. \u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Among other celebrated individuals, this superbly well-researched and masterfully done documentary features the commentaries of the poet Antonio Murciano<\/strong>, cantaoras Carmen Linares, Esperanza Fern\u00e1ndez, Mayte Mart\u00edn, Salom\u00e9 Pav\u00f3n<\/strong> and Rosario la Tremendita<\/strong>, masters Fosforito<\/strong> and Manolo Sanl\u00facar<\/strong>, young cantaor Israel Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong>, author Cristina Cruces<\/strong>, writer and musicologist Faustino N\u00fa\u00f1ez<\/strong>, lawyer and researcher Luis Su\u00e1rez \u00c1vila<\/strong>, vintage records expert Carlos Mart\u00edn Ballester<\/strong> and flamenco critic Manuel Boh\u00f3rquez<\/strong>, the documentary\u2019s advisor and ExpoFlamenco director.<\/p>\n

A child prodigy of cante<\/em>, Pastora Pav\u00f3n started performing in the early 1900s with such success that soon she was mingling with the greatest flamenco stars of those years, such as Trini de M\u00e1laga,<\/strong> Chac\u00f3n<\/strong>, Manuel Torres, Manuel Vallejo, Juanaca de M\u00e1laga, Macarrona<\/strong> and guitarist Ni\u00f1o Ricardo<\/strong>. She first recorded in 1909, accompanied by the guitar of Ram\u00f3n Montoya<\/strong>, and from then on, her career was unstoppable. She performed in virtually all of Spain\u2019s theaters, and her success was echoed by every newspaper in the country.<\/p>\n

Never before had the written press covered so much and so well a flamenco artist. Yet, in the making of the documentary, the producers were not able to find any live footage of this cantaora<\/em>, because she was famously camera-shy, avoiding film and radio studios alike. Fortunately, she at least allowed herself to be photographed, as can be attested by the documentary\u2019s extensive graphic material.<\/p>\n

Canal Sur Televisi\u00f3n<\/a> collaborated with this documentary and will broadcast it at a yet-to-be-determined date. Besides Seville, the presentation of this film will also take place in Madrid, M\u00e1laga, Barcelona and Arahal, the birthplace of her mother and older brother, cantaor<\/em> Arturo Pav\u00f3n Cruz<\/strong>, father of pianist Arturo Pav\u00f3n S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
