The word \u201ccupl\u00e9\u201d comes from the French \u201ccouplet\u201d, which, in turn, derives from Latin, \u201ccopulare\u201d (no giggling please), and which came to be applied to this alternative to buler\u00eda corta<\/em>. Which requires another definition: what is buler\u00eda corta? Let\u2019s just say it\u2019s the alter ego of sole\u00e1, verses of 3 or 4 lines in the Phrygian mode (flamenco mode), that may or may not include the repetition of lines. Nearly everything else inserted into buler\u00edas, tends to be called \u201ccupl\u00e9\u201d.<\/p>\n There have been many hundreds of cupl\u00e9s por buler\u00edas recorded by well-known singers, who, in the best interpretations, have transformed syrupy sentimental pieces into powerful flamenco whose interest and artistic worth may surpass the original non-flamenco versions. Consider the bolero Coraz\u00f3n Loco<\/em>, first recorded in the honey-toasted voice of Antonio Mach\u00edn. Miguel Vargas \u201cBambino\u201d gives a searing interpretation that defies the limits of flamenco and its ability to raise gooseflesh. And for those of you thinking \u201cbut Bambino wasn\u2019t exactly a flamenco singer\u201d, be assured he knew and interpreted traditional cante<\/em> at private gatherings of friends and family in Utrera, and that capacity fed his flamenco instincts to enable the transformation of popular music into hard-core flamenco, making him a cult figure.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Portada del ced\u00e9 ‘As\u00ed fue’, de Bambino.<\/p><\/div>\n <\/p>\n Another example is Adela la Chaqueta, and her unforgettable version of Voy a Perder la Cabeza por tu Amor<\/em>. An inoffensive Caribbean-flavored love-song is pumped up to the verge of spontaneous combustion with an edgy delivery that leaves the listener exhausted. From the same family, the encyclopedic Antonio el Chaqueta was well-known for his talent for unique cupl\u00e9 and impossible tongue-twisters.<\/p>\n El Romance de la Reina Mercedes<\/em>, lush music and sentimental lyrics borrowed from the great tonadillera<\/em> (songstress?), Concha Piquer. Bernarda de Utrera scooped up this romantic masterpiece, and ran with it. Other flamenco singers have included it in their repertoires, but no version is as gripping as Bernarda\u2019s, one of many cupl\u00e9s she infused with the scorching power of her personality. La Senda del Viento, <\/em>in memory of Carmen Amaya, is another of her classics. Her sister Fernanda, though mostly known for her masterful sole\u00e1, also knew how to find flamenco through cupl\u00e9. Se nos Rompi\u00f3 el Amor <\/em>plays in the minds of most flamenco fans in the voice of Fernanda de Utrera. Without leaving Utrera, there\u2019s the great Gaspar de Utrera. Master of the most difficult forms, he had no problem squeezing flamenco out of a number of songs that became his trademark. <\/p>\n Where does all the energy come from? By knowing how to elongate or fragment the verses, modify the melody or the words, lengthen, repeat or adorn, the singer\u2019s personality emerges, upstaging the music, and a cupl\u00e9 por buler\u00eda<\/em> is born. Keep in mind the very important issue of tempo. No matter how fast the guitar accompaniment is, the voice can serenely inhabit the comp\u00e1s at a pace the singer chooses because there is often no direct link between the sung notes and the guitar. The most flamenco cupl\u00e9s present as buler\u00edas rather than \u201csongs accompanied por buler\u00edas\u201d.
