{"id":23021,"date":"2020-11-11T22:21:22","date_gmt":"2020-11-11T21:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=23021"},"modified":"2020-11-11T22:33:52","modified_gmt":"2020-11-11T21:33:52","slug":"10th-anniversary-of-unescos-designation-of-flamenco-as-intangible-cultural-heritage-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/actualidad-en\/10th-anniversary-of-unescos-designation-of-flamenco-as-intangible-cultural-heritage-1\/","title":{"rendered":"10th anniversary of UNESCO\u2019s designation of Flamenco as Intangible Cultural Heritage (1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we think of Flamenco, Kenya is perhaps not the first country that comes to mind, although it is a nation where one of the great milestones of this noble musical genre happened this century. At four o\u2019clock in the afternoon \u2014 a time as good as any other \u2014 the news was given in Nairobi. Flamenco had been included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ich.unesco.org\/en\/RL\/flamenco-00363?RL=00363\">Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity<\/a>, a decision taken by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/\">UNESCO<\/a>\u2019s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, made up by twenty-four members.<\/p>\n<p>Such accolade was contested among no less than forty-seven candidates from thirty-one countries. Besides, a previous submission in 2005 had failed. It was only in 2009 when another application was submitted in Paris and at the beginning of 2010 the <em>Junta de Andaluc\u00eda<\/em> promoted the nomination with its campaign <strong><em>Flamenco Soy<\/em><\/strong>. Over thirty thousand people \u2014 artists and private individuals \u2014 from sixty different countries voted for flamenco\u2019s nomination in UNESCO\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>Browsing the news of those days, we find grandiose statements and headlines. \u00abAn hemorrhage of utter satisfaction\u00bb were the words that <em>cantaor<\/em> <strong>Jos\u00e9 Merc\u00e9<\/strong> used at the time. That November 16<sup>th<\/sup>, \u00abMankind became flamenco\u2019s heritage\u00bb, stated the incomparable <strong>Enrique Morente<\/strong>. Some, such as the unique <strong>Jos\u00e9 de la Tomasa<\/strong>, went further. \u00ab[Flamenco] is above all those things, because when the soul speaks, accolades are meaningless. The soul is the only thing we have left in this life\u00bb, stated the artist.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abAs we celebrate the 10<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of UNESCO\u2019s designation of flamenco as Intangible Cultural Heritage, what has been the impact of such accolade in these ten years?\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In those days, before UNESCO\u2019s final decision was made, the <em>Correo de Andaluc\u00eda<\/em>&nbsp;newspaper gathered the <em>cr\u00e8me de la cr\u00e8me<\/em> of flamenco critics in Seville\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xn--peaflamencatorresmacarena-9nc.com\/\">Pe\u00f1a Torres Macarena<\/a>&nbsp;to discuss the nomination. Among those in attendance were our dear Manuel Boh\u00f3rquez (<em>Expoflamenco<\/em> director),&nbsp;<strong>Manuel Curao<\/strong>&nbsp;(Canal Sur),&nbsp;<strong>Alberto Garc\u00eda Reyes<\/strong>&nbsp;(ABC), Antonio Ortega (Giralda TV) and Juan Vergillos (<em>Diario de Sevilla<\/em>). All agreed that UNESCO would accept the nomination, facing all the evidence. Yet, they also warned that it was not going to be a panacea. \u00abI hope that the authorities who have enthusiastically supported this nomination now get on it. Artistically, UNESCO will not contribute anything, at best it will give a social recognition beyond the world of flamenco aficionados. But I would bet on a revolution from the bottom up\u00bb, stated&nbsp;<strong>Juan Verguillos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abNow it looks like everyone will jump on the flamenco bandwagon. And I am also worried about some people who think what we will get showered with financial aids\u00bb, explained <strong>Antonio Ortega<\/strong>. \u00abThe authorities should get on with the program and not take six months to pay an artist. Flamenco is not a ghost or an abstract entity. It is made by people\u00bb, concluded Ortega.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abWhen UNESCO finally acknowledges flamenco, I will have in mind the humble work of the <em>pe\u00f1as flamencas<\/em>, in particular, because they have kept flamenco alive for half a century\u00bb, stated&nbsp;<strong>Manuel Boh\u00f3rquez<\/strong>. \u00abIn a way, this is a wake-up call. It is not quite the same, but this is similar to the iconic 1922 <em>Concurso de Cante Jondo de Granada<\/em> promoted by Manuel de Falla and Lorca. It is a warning to the world, a reminder that here [in Andalusia] the is an art genre worth minding. I am surprised that there are still people discovering flamenco\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abThe year 2020 is a very dark time for the arts in general and flamenco in particular. The arrival of a global pandemic has been the last straw for an industry that has been begging for help for a long time. Many tablaos have closed down and artists form associations asking for help\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<h3><strong>The fifth year<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In 2015, five years after flamenco was included in that UNESCO list, the <em>Asociaci\u00f3n de Artistas Flamencos<\/em> (AAF) and the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/confederacionflamenca\/\">Confederaci\u00f3n Andaluza de Pe\u00f1as Flamencas<\/a><\/em> stated that such milestone had not had a direct impact on professional flamenco artists and the <em>pe\u00f1as<\/em> had barely benefited from it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abThere has been no direct impact such as a greater promotion of flamenco or a greater investment in the genre for its better development\u00bb, explained&nbsp;<strong>Asunci\u00f3n Demartos<\/strong>, president of the AAF, in a statement given to <em>Europa Press.<\/em>&nbsp;\u00abThe city does not experience flamenco, [flamenco] schools don\u2019t grow, so that designation has been useless for promoting flamenco in our land\u00bb, said Demartos.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abIt was an achievement, but it did not translate in anything significant for the evolution of pe\u00f1as. Financial aid by the government institutions remains the same, and things work the same as before\u00bb, said&nbsp;<strong>Antonio Calle<\/strong>, president of the <em>Confederaci\u00f3n Andaluza de Pe\u00f1as<\/em>, in another statement given to <em>Europa Press. <\/em>\u00abThe people performing the most basic flamenco are the ones who have sustained the genre, because artists are born in the <em>pe\u00f1as<\/em>, that\u2019s where the heritage in maintained, yet the aid from the public institutions is very limited\u00bb, concluded Calle.<\/p>\n<p>The year 2020 is a very dark time for the arts in general and flamenco in particular.
