{"id":21387,"date":"2020-09-05T00:07:53","date_gmt":"2020-09-04T22:07:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=21387"},"modified":"2020-09-05T00:18:05","modified_gmt":"2020-09-04T22:18:05","slug":"does-cigala-have-a-return-ticket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/chronicles\/does-cigala-have-a-return-ticket\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Cigala have a return ticket?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of the 1990s a group of young flamenco percussionists by the name of <strong>Echegaray Street<\/strong> were scheduled to perform in Madrid\u2019s renowned <a href=\"https:\/\/casapatas.com\/\">Casa Patas<\/a> <em>tablao<\/em>, which closed down recently. For their first show, they asked several first-rate <em>cantaores<\/em> to perform alongside them, which resulted in an unforgettable night for all those in attendance. I remember that <strong>Guadiana<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Potito <\/strong>were among them. But the one who really stood out was an artist who was just starting to make a name for himself, <strong>Dieguito el Cigala<\/strong>. He opened his mouth, sang a <em>seguiriya<\/em> and the party was over. No one dared to sing after him.<\/p>\n<p>That was over twenty years ago. Dieguito has now become Diego, a world celebrity, perhaps the most sought-after <em>cantaor<\/em> in our days. Ever since <strong>Bebo Vald\u00e9s<\/strong>\u00a0showed him all the riches that could be made singing <em>boleros<\/em>, Cigala has felt an increasing fondness for Latin rhythms \u2014 it wasn&#8217;t by chance that he became a citizen of the Dominican Republic in 2014 \u2014 as he has every right to do. Yet, his scheduled performance at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccbahiasur.com\/\"><em>Centro Comercial Bah\u00eda Sur<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in San Fernando (C\u00e1diz), part of the concert series <strong><em>\u00a1Bah\u00eda en vivo!<\/em><\/strong>, seemed like a good occasion to assess how much flamenco was left in this artist from Madrid. Perhaps we should start by saying that Cigala radiates flamenco even when he sleeps. His piercing voice, his ease with <em>melismas<\/em>, everything about him has a definite flamenco feel. The fact that he brought two guitarists and one percussionist reinforced our belief that this was going to be a flamenco evening. Yet, he could also choose to sing that repertoire of boleros that had made him so rich, tuning them <em>por tangos<\/em> or <em>por buler\u00edas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The organization was perfect, and the public respectful with the health and social distancing regulations. The mosquitos from the salt marshes feasted on the attendees as Cigala opened with <em>Si te contara<\/em>,\u00a0continuing with a tribute to <strong>Mach\u00edn<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Un compromiso<\/em>, then turning to Argentina with <em>Canci\u00f3n de las simples cosas, <\/em>made famous by the great <strong>Mercedes Sosa<\/strong>, and returning to <em>boleros<\/em> with <strong>Julio Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Inolvidable<\/em> and <strong>Mach\u00edn<\/strong>\u00a0\u2018s\u00a0<em>Coraz\u00f3n loco.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abThe artists seemed to warm up a little with his hit L\u00e1grimas negras before finally dabbing onto flamenco. He sang an endless series of tangos in the style of Camar\u00f3n\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No objections, at least from yours truly, to a <em>cantaor<\/em> wishing to visit other musical territories. Besides the well-known links between Latin music and flamenco, no good aficionado dislikes a good <em>bolero<\/em> or a fierce tango, just like no one from Latin America can remain unmoved by a good <em>cante<\/em> or a guitar playing <em>por sole\u00e1<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Cigala went through his repertoire rather half-heartedly, even cold, without making good use of his powerful voice and entrusting it all to his prodigious tuning. It was all rounded up by his very good band and by the enthusiasm of the public, captivated by the magnetism of the artist and by the sentimental intensity of the songs. Yet, perhaps it wasn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n<p>The artist seemed to warm up a little with his hit <em>L\u00e1grimas negras<\/em> before finally dabbing onto flamenco, perhaps aware that he was performing in <em>La Isla de Le\u00f3n<\/em>. He sang an endless series of tangos in the style of Camar\u00f3n and left the stage to let the percussion and guitars perform a pleasant \u2014 although a bit rushed \u2014 version of <strong>Chick Corea<\/strong>\u2018s <em>Spain<\/em>, closing <em>por buler\u00edas<\/em> with the same disdain he had displayed during the whole recital.<\/p>\n<p>In that moment, we had many questions. Could Diego El Cigala perform in San Fernardo and not mention even once the <em>cantaor<\/em> he undoubtedly owes the most? He could, although he hinted at <strong>Jos\u00e9 Monge Cruz, <em>Camar\u00f3n de la Isla<\/em><\/strong>, in the <em>buler\u00edas<\/em>. Could he leave the stage without introducing the musicians who accompanied him on stage? Not only he could, but that is what he did. Thus, we never knew who those artists who supported him for an hour and a half were, and we were unable to applaud their work. And there was no hand program which would allow us to clear that up, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding what interests us the most, the strictly musical aspect: is there a return ticket for El Cigala\u2019s Latin American trip? Six years ago, this <em>cantaor<\/em> recorded with <strong>Diego del Morao<\/strong>\u00a0a live album with a wide range of <em>palos<\/em> titled <em>Vuelve el Flamenco <\/em>(\u201c<em>Flamenco is Back<\/em>\u201d), implicitly acknowledging that flamenco had left him.
