{"id":20229,"date":"2020-06-26T13:49:45","date_gmt":"2020-06-26T11:49:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=20229"},"modified":"2020-07-01T00:10:30","modified_gmt":"2020-06-30T22:10:30","slug":"a-story-about-tomas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/a-story-about-tomas\/","title":{"rendered":"A story about Tom\u00e1s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One night, more than thirty years ago, as I was having some drinks at La Alameda de H\u00e9rcules, the popular street in Seville which for many years was the most important flamenco spot in the whole world, I met a close friend of <strong>Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/strong>, a man over 80 years old, thin, with a grumpy face and a very faint voice, <strong>Antonio Villegas Acedo<\/strong>. This man had owned a little tavern on Relator street, inherited from his father, and he told me that one night in the early 1940s, just after the end of the Spanish Civil War, Tom\u00e1s showed up with a wealthy aficionado from the Basque country in northern Spain who wanted to listen to him singing in private. Before starting, Tom\u00e1s, brother of <strong>Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/strong>, sent for the guitarist <strong>Antonio Moreno<\/strong> (born in C\u00f3rdoba but raised in La Alameda), with whom <strong>Pastora Pav\u00f3n<\/strong> had recorded several great albums in 1932. That guitarist was as reserved as Tom\u00e1s, according to Antonio Villegas, and he couldn\u2019t stand any kind of nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>The Basque aficionado was a sensitive soul who was only interested in lyrics about mothers, as his own mother had just passed away, and fandangos were his favorite <em>cante<\/em>. Tom\u00e1s used to sing to his mother, Pastora<sup>1<\/sup>, those moving lyrics \u201c<em>A mi mare por su alma \/ to\u00edtas las noches le rezo<\/em>\u201d (\u201c<em>For my mother\u2019s soul I pray \/ Every single night<\/em>\u201d), <em>por grana\u00ednas<\/em>, and he sang it over and over. The Basque aficionado did nothing but cry and drink like a fish, while Antonio Moreno, another gentle soul, comforted him. This went on the whole night, and in the morning the aficionado asked them how much he owed them for their private performance. Tom\u00e1s and Antonio looked at each other, very seriously, and as they had agreed beforehand, Tom\u00e1s said: \u201cLook, since you\u2019ve spent the whole night crying, it\u2019s all good. Just pay for the drinks and that\u2019s it\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abAs there were no dressing rooms in the venue, someone told them they could change in a nearby basement, part of a funeral home. When Vallejo went down to the basement and saw the caskets, he ran up the stairs, cursing Naranjito and all his ancestors, and he never went back to that town ever again\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One day I told this story to <strong>Chocolate<\/strong>, a die-hard fan of Tom\u00e1s, and he told me a similar story which happened to him when he was about 15 years old. There was a very wealthy aficionado in Seville who loved his mother very much and one night, at the time when Chocolate made a living with <strong>La Moreno<\/strong>, he met him and asked: \u201cWould you be able to sing some sentimental fandangos for my saintly mother?\u201d. Chocolate said that he wouldn\u2019t mind at all, and besides he was starving and needed the money. The aficionado got him in his car and took him to Seville\u2019s cemetery, by the old San Ger\u00f3nimo bridge, which no longer exists. It was raining when they stopped at the bridge and the aficionado asked Chocolate to sing half a dozen fandangos for his mother. Antonio wished he was dead himself, as it was raining cats and dogs, singing without a guitarist and watching the pointy cypress trees in the cemetery across the bridge. As he sang lyrics of <strong>Carbonerillo<\/strong> and <strong>Bizco Amate<\/strong>, the poor man cried like a child. Can you imagine that scene, such a gloomy sight? Such were the aficionados of those days, people who could ask a <em>cantaor<\/em> to sing specific lyrics and palos, because they could pay for it. This happened often at La Alameda, in venues such as <strong>La Europa<\/strong> and <strong>Las Siete Puertas<\/strong>, which no longer exist.<\/p>\n<p>Those were hard days for <em>cantaores<\/em> and <em>cantaoras<\/em>, and that was perhaps demeaning, but it was the work available. Only a handful of artists could make a living performing in theatres. Some <em>cantaores<\/em> would not bow to the will of the <em>se\u00f1oritos<\/em>, though, such as, for example, <strong>Manuel Vallejo<\/strong>. If anyone asked don Manuel to sing romantic lyrics, for being in love or perhaps heartbroken, he would retort: \u201cSend for <strong>Ni\u00f1o de Marchena<\/strong>, as roses and perfume come out of his mouth\u201d. He could not stand him, by the way, having said once that he was a \u201cladies\u2019 <em>cantaor<\/em>\u201d. Then there were those who would ask Vallejo to sing about dead people. In his later years, already half-retired, <strong>Naranjito de Triana<\/strong> hired Vallejo to sing with him in El Viso del Alcor. As there were no dressing rooms in the venue, someone told them they could change in a nearby basement, part of a funeral home.
