She loved Pepe Pinto very much, and despite the fact that she no longer performed, she would often accompany her husband to his performances in the theatres, always remaining backstage. Besides, Pepe was thirteen years younger than her, and he was good looking and affectionate with everyone. One night, Pepe left the theater for whatever reason, and Pastora would ask everyone:<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cHave you seen Pepe? I can\u2019t find him anywhere\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cI think he just stepped out for a bit, to have a drink, Pastora. Don\u2019t worry, he won\u2019t get lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cIt\u2019s just that I don\u2019t trust him one bit, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cCome on Pastora! Pepe is a bit too old already for fooling around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cYou have no idea. He charms them like the lizards, with his big eyes, and the eyes are always young\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Golden Key of Cante awarded to Lebrijano?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One evening in my radio show I had as a guest a big star of cante flamenco, and I thought I\u2019d pull a prank on him by saying that the Junta de Andaluc\u00eda was going to award the 4<sup>th<\/sup> Golden Key of Cante to Juan El Lebrijano. As we were broadcasting live, my guest didn\u2019t say anything, as he was good friends with Lebrijano. Yet, as soon as the show ended, he asked me right away:<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cManuel, is that true? That\u2019s quite something!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>-Totally true.<\/p>\n<p>-What are we going to do? We\u2019ve got to do something, right? Get the pe\u00f1as protesting on the streets, call for a popular uprising, speak against this barbarity\u2026 How can this be?! Ah, no wonder\u2026 He\u2019s friends with the President!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The great Farruco<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019ve already mentioned that, in my opinion, the most impressive bailaor I\u2019ve ever met has been Farruco. I was lucky to have him as a friend, and I had the privilege to watch him perform many times. I remember one day I asked him to teach me how to get a kick (\u201c<em>pata\u00edta\u201d<\/em>) por buler\u00edas, something that I had never been able to do. We were at his academy, at Su Eminecia, and he looked at me up and down, with those dark eyes of his which seemed to pierce the walls:<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cIf I charge you by the square feet, you\u2019ll end up broke\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The things of Mario Maya<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One day I was with Mario Maya in a theater in New York, and he was approached by an impressive African-American woman of about 40 years, with long legs like the columns of La Alameda de H\u00e9rcules. The woman had recognized Mario and didn\u2019t think twice about hitting on him. Mario managed to get rid of her, which was totally out of character, so I asked him:<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cMario, how could reject such a beautiful woman? That\u2019s not like you at all!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cDo you know how old I am, Manuel? If she ever laid her hands on me, I\u2019d have to spend a month recovering in bed!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The things of Farruco<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One day I was with Farruco talking about bailaores and I mentioned three great ones: Mario Maya, Manolete and El G\u00fcito. He didn\u2019t say anything bad about them, on the contrary, yet he stated:<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cThey\u2019re good, but it would not be possible to make a stew out of the three of them. They\u2019re too skinny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Search &amp; Arrest<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One of the times when Manuel Gerena(1) was arrested was in Gij\u00f3n, in northern Spain. He was meant to perform with the guitarist Manuel Molina, but the governor banned the performance. After that singer-songwriter from Puebla de Cazalla was arrested, the police chief ordered the arrest of the guitarist, too, who was walking around Guij\u00f3n with his guitar in its case. When the police found him, Manuel Molina was baffled:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; \u201cThose gach\u00e9s, how on earth did they recognize me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike in Triana, people in Gij\u00f3n just don\u2019t walk around with guitars.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The things of Am\u00f3s Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One day I went for drinks with the late Am\u00f3s Rodr\u00edguez Rey, the wise cantaor from C\u00e1diz, brother of the also late Beni de C\u00e1diz, may both rest in peace. We were a bit tipsy and we were stopped by the police at a checkpoint on the road from Castilleja de la Cuesta to Seville. We got out the car and I was interrogated as if I had committed a heinous crime.<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cLet\u2019s see. Where are you guys going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told him we were going to Los Remedios, where I was going to drop off Amos at his house, but the officer just kept on asking questions, so the master from C\u00e1diz decided to take charge of the embarrassing situation:<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cLook, Mr. Officer, I am Amos Rodriguez Rey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer shrugged and said he had never heard of him. Amos continued introducing himself:<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cPerhaps you don\u2019t know who I am, but let me tell you that I\u2019m the brother of Beni de C\u00e1diz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer shrugged again, as he had never heard of any of them. Then Amos asked him:<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cWhere are you from, kid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cI\u2019m from San Roque, in C\u00e1diz\u201d<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cSo you\u2019re from San Roque and you don\u2019t know who Beni de C\u00e1diz is?
