Tom\u00e1s did as advised, not singing for two years and only talking when strictly necessary. He relieved his sorrows crafting cages for his own birds, repairing pocket watches and fishing by La Barqueta. Yet, one day, celebrating the feast of Pepe Pinto\u2019s patron saint, at Pepe\u2019s home, some family friends got together, among them Melchor de Marchena, El Ni\u00f1o de Aznalc\u00f3llor, La Perla de Triana and her son, El Perlo. They all sang, but Tom\u00e1s agonized because he couldn\u2019t take out all the fire that burned inside his soul of cantaor. Pastora asked Melchor to play <em>por seguiriyas<\/em>, but before she started singing, Tom\u00e1s went ahead, unable to contain himself anymore. It was such a performance by this genius from Leoncillos street that when he finished singing, Pastora opened the house\u2019s balcony door on Calatrava street and started screaming, pulling her hair out. In one sitting, Tom\u00e1s had taken out all the sorrows that had accumulated in those years, with a seguiriya that, according to Tolita and El Perlo, seemed to have come out of the grave of Manuel Torres, Tom\u00e1s\u2019 idol. For a cantaor like him, who had the gift of emotion and musical beauty, there was no worse punishment than not being able to sing<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Ha muerto Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Que nadie abra la boca,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>que aqu\u00ed se acab\u00f3 el carb\u00f3n.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Camar\u00f3n\u2019s jealousy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Camar\u00f3n once locked himself up in his flat in Seville, trying to sort out his problems. He wouldn\u2019t see anyone except his agent, Jes\u00fas Antonio Pulp\u00f3n, who one day told me that the genius listened every night to my radio show \u201c<em>&#8216;El duende y El t\u00e1rab<\/em>&#8216;. I would play a lot of Camar\u00f3n in that daily, two-hour show. I would also play a lot of Enrique Morente. They have been my idols, the greatest cantaores of our times. I came across Jos\u00e9 (Camar\u00f3n) one night in C\u00e1diz, and after he greeted me, he asked \u201cManuel, I have a question: who likes Morente the most, Duende, or T\u00e1rab\u2026?\u201d I was a bit puzzled, but Pulp\u00f3n was with us and he explained the question Camar\u00f3n had asked with half a smile, more like Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n\u2019s grimace: \u201cIt\u2019s just that sometimes Jos\u00e9 get jealous when you say so many nice things about Morente\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Chocolate and the Civil Guard<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For a time, Antonio el Chocolate used to ride his motorbike to go to perform in festivals. He would pack his suit and shoes in a small cardboard box and hit the road:<br \/>\nMairena, Mor\u00f3n, La Puebla\u2026 Riding one night to one of those festivals, I think it was Mairena\u2019s, the Civil Guard stopped him and asked:<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cHaven\u2019t you noticed that your bike\u2019s headlight isn\u2019t working properly? It\u2019s quite dim\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; No, I haven\u2019t. I\u2019ll check it out tomorrow, because I\u2019m El Chocolate and I got to perform, they\u2019re waiting for me.<\/p>\n<p>-El Chocolate! No worries, we\u2019ll escort you to Mairena.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, that genius of cante arrived in Mairena escorted by the Civil Guard. At the city limits, he told them:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Many thanks. You can go now. If people see me arriving at the festival escorted by the Civil Guard, they\u2019ll think I\u2019m the Governor!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>With Perro de Paterna<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One night I attended a performance by the late Perro de Paterna at the Gran Teatro de Huelva, where he went on a rant on-stage against the also late Paco Vallecillo, a staunch promoter of mairenismo. I heavily criticized those out-of-place comments, and after a few months, on my way back from M\u00e1laga, I came across that cantaor from Paterna in a venta by the roadside. We had never met before. Someone had told him I was a flamenco critic, without stating my name. He asked:<\/p>\n<p>-Are you a flamenco critic?<\/p>\n<p>-Yes, that\u2019s my job.<\/p>\n<p>-By any chance, do you know one Manuel Boh\u00f3rquez? I\u2019ve got to tell him one thing or two.<\/p>\n<p>I was sitting, so I stood up and I told him that it was me, and asked him what was the problem. He looked at me up and down. After he carefully observing all of my six feet and two inches, he asked me quite serious and all shaken:<\/p>\n<p>-So, what are you drinking?<\/p>\n<p>We had a few drinks and he didn\u2019t say anything else. If I were as tall as Manuel Martin Mart\u00edn I would have been in trouble. El Perro was a good man, but he was quite upset with me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The things of Mario Maya<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Regarding the \u201cpremieres\u201d and the \u201cworld premieres\u201d at the Bienal, there is a story about Mario Maya. Jos\u00e9 Luis Ortiz was \u201cpremiering\u201d one day a production at the Lope de Vega theater in Seville, \u201cThe Four Stations\u201d, and Mario asked me to join him to attend that performance. We watched the show from the theater\u2019s gallery and when it finished he asked me: \u201cManuel, did you see summer, autumn, winter or spring anywhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The levitating midget<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There was a half-blind midget in Seville who was a very good singer of saetas, and one Holy Thursday he was keen on singing to the statue of the Virgin of Macarena, as it passed the Bar Pinto, on Campana street. He was helped to a chair that was by the door of the bar, and as the procession with the statue of the Virgin approached and the midget started singing, Beni de C\u00e1diz and Pepe el Culata lifted up the chair. When the midget finished singing and got down to earth, he told everyone around, moved to tears: \u201cI felt as if I had been lifted up! That means the Virgin loved my singing and wanted to take me to Heaven with her!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The interrupted taranta<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At the contest of La Uni\u00f3n, the pre-selection of the contestants used to be made in the town itself, in one or two days, at most. Since there were so many contestants, the jury secretary, Deogracias, would stop them short just after they started singing, saying \u201cOK, OK, thank you.\u201d. One day, there was a dim-witted contestant from Ja\u00e9n, whose name I no longer remember. He started to sing a taranta, but was more out of tune than a cricket inside a tin can, so Deagracias stopped him short:<\/p>\n<p>-OK, OK, that\u2019s enough, many thanks.<\/p>\n<p>The good man got pale with rage: \u201cI won\u2019t stop because I don\u2019t feel like it!
