After Spain and Japan, Mexico is the third country with the most flamenco academies in the world. Here<\/a>\u00a0we already discussed the flamenco fever taking hold of that nation. Thanks to the work of the academies, now and then stars such as Paulina Ruiz<\/strong> come out.<\/p>\n

This bailaora<\/em> from Guadalajara (Jalisco state) is becoming established as one of the most promising jewels of flamenco in Mexico. After the successful Ib\u00e9rica Contempor\u00e1nea<\/a><\/em>\u00a0dance festival held in 2017, the Fundaci\u00f3n Cristina Heeren<\/a><\/em>\u00a0granted Paulina \u2014 then just 17 years old \u2014 half scholarship for its Curso Flamenco Anual<\/em>. This young bailaora<\/em> thus followed in the footsteps of other Mexican students such as Carmen Young<\/strong> and Mar\u00eda Martha Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Paulina Ruiz continues to grow and on Saturday, March 14th<\/sup> she\u2019ll perform her show Noche flamenca<\/em>\u00a0(\u2018Flamenco Night\u2019) in Tapalpa. She\u2019ll be joined by her brother Mario Ruiz<\/strong>, also a bailaor<\/em>, and by guitarist Fernando Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>. \u00abI\u2019ll perform traditional flamenco, which is the style of baile<\/em> I like the most. There will be alegr\u00edas <\/em>of C\u00e1diz, sole\u00e1 por buler\u00edas<\/em>, and my musicians will perform tangos<\/em> and a few Mexican songs with a flamenco bent\u00bb, explained the artist in a statement published at informador.mx.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The show will take place at 8 PM at Hotel La Casa de Maty<\/strong>, located on 69 Matamoros, in Tapalpa\u2019s downtown. Besides, as of March 5th<\/sup>, Ruiz is performing every Thursday at Caf\u00e9 48, and later she\u2019ll take part in an international festival which will be held at Degollado Theater with Ana de la Peza\u2019s company Encuentro Flamenco<\/em>, under the direction of the Spanish bailaora<\/em> Mariana Collado.<\/p>\n

This successful bailaora<\/em> also teaches at Las Cabales<\/strong> dance academy. She recalls having started dancing flamenco when she was 3 years-old, and what was initially a pastime became a career. \u00abWomen have an essential role in flamenco and in life. I always say that in flamenco, as in life, nothing happens without women. Women feature in flamenco\u2019s history from the very beginning. I feel empowered when I dance, it makes me feel strong\u00bb, Paulina said.<\/p>\n

Flamenco in Guadalajara<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Proud of her birthplace, this bailaora<\/em> tells informador.mx<\/em>\u00a0that Guadalajara is one of the Mexican cities where flamenco is most popular and where the public shows greatest interest. \u00abThe new generation is very strong, very impressive. The old generation embraces the new. Flamenco is very traditional, but it\u2019s also very flexible and innovation is always welcomed with great respect. Stars such as maestra <\/em>Triana Maciel<\/strong>\u00a0are teaching the new generations\u00bb, stated Ruiz.<\/p>\n

The new star of baile<\/em> is certain that flamenco in Guadalajara and Mexico is alive and well thanks to that new batch of young bailaoras<\/em>. Besides, she has encouraged their training so they can learn about flamenco culture in greater depth.<\/p>\n
