Browsing the internet, we may come across lists such as The Best Hamburgers in Madrid<\/em> or Five must-see places in Valencia<\/em>, and many others like that. Flamenco, designated Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, is no stranger to those peculiar lists. There are many locals and foreigners who, as soon as they arrive in a new city, seek places where they can enjoy flamenco.<\/p>\n

In this occasion we travel to Madrid, where we may find charming spots such as Taberna Sanl\u00facar, Casa Patas, El Callej\u00f3n de Madrid, Bodegas Alfaro and\u00a0Al Vicente Copas<\/strong>, better known as Bar San Rom\u00e1n<\/strong>. What is necessary to enjoy good flamenco? Do we need a big stage where the artists can perform? The answer is a clear and emphatic \u201cno\u201d.<\/p>\n

The protagonist of this article is a case in point: the renowned and almost legendary Bar San Rom\u00e1n. Its manager, Vicente Romero<\/strong>, has turned its tiny 160 ft2 <\/sup>area into a veritable flamenco temple in the Spanish capital. It has hosted flamenco stars of the stature of Enrique Morente<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n

\u00abA unique place that every visitor remembers with fondness. A flamenco sanctuary that fills the nights of Madrid with cantes por sole\u00e1 and buler\u00edas\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here at ExpoFlamenco<\/strong> we\u2019ve taken note of this magical place thanks to the excellent article<\/a>\u00a0by Juan Diego Quesada<\/strong>\u00a0at El Pa\u00eds<\/em> newspaper. Many people say that Bar San Rom\u00e1n is the smallest bar in Madrid. Its regular clientele is secretive about the place and it\u2019s certainly off the beaten path. \u00abWe have to climb down some stairs to arrive at a V-shaped bar\u00bb, explains Juan Diego in his article.<\/p>\n

Its owner is 64 years old and he\u2019s been working in the flamenco hospitality industry for half his life. Vicente Romero opens the bar and starts playing a loop of an extensive collection of the greatest flamenco cantaores <\/em>in history in a flat-screen TV. It\u2019s a compilation worth its weight in gold thanks to its spectacular anthologies.<\/p>\n

The place is small, minuscule. Barely fifteen people fit inside. It\u2019s a true jewel for its clientele. \u00abVicente is a connoisseur<\/em>. He\u2019s what we call a flamencolic<\/em>, because he\u2019s not orthodox, but listening to flamenco twelve hours every day, it\u2019s hard not to become an expert. He has very good taste. He has met many guitarists and cantaores<\/em>\u00bb, explained\u00a0C\u00e9sar Su\u00e1rez<\/strong>, culture editor-in-chief of Telva<\/em> magazine, speaking to El Pa\u00eds<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u00abI met Morente, Enrique de Melchor, Tomatito and Mora\u00edto Chico. Only Tomatito is still alive. The other three died of cancer. Cancer is the illness of flamenco\u00bb, ponders a nostalgic Vicente Romero in his conversation with El Pa\u00eds<\/em>.<\/p>\n
