{"id":18485,"date":"2020-03-02T19:51:25","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T18:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=18485"},"modified":"2020-03-02T20:01:34","modified_gmt":"2020-03-02T19:01:34","slug":"antonio-reyes-to-be-honored-in-paradas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/antonio-reyes-to-be-honored-in-paradas\/","title":{"rendered":"Antonio Reyes to be honored in Paradas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Antonio Reyes<\/strong>, from Chiclana (C\u00e1diz province), is one of the <em>cantaores<\/em> I like the most, because he has a sweet voice and is a great artist, beside being a wonderful person. The fact that he\u2019ll be honored at the <strong>30<sup>th<\/sup> Flamenco Week of Paradas<\/strong> has surprised me for several reasons, but mainly because it departs from the usual tributes that this great flamenco event of Paradas organizes each year: honoring the long careers of flamenco masters, not only in <em>cante<\/em>, <em>baile<\/em> and <em>toque<\/em>, but also critics.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t understand this tribute to Antonio Reyes, as much as I like and admire him, because he is a young <em>cantaor<\/em>, born in 1975, who, even as he\u2019s been performing since his childhood, doesn\u2019t have a meaningful discography or is particularly well-versed in flamenco. He is a professional <em>cantaor<\/em> who is able to make a comfortable living performing on stages, but if that is all it takes to be honored at the Flamenco Week of Paradas then I\u2019m missing something. I don\u2019t get it, because there are so many flamenco <em>maestros<\/em> and <em>maestras<\/em> in flamenco who pass away without ever being honored in any way, and we have the obligation to prevent this from happening.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abI don\u2019t understand this tribute to Antonio Reyes, as much as I like and admire him, because he is a young cantaor who doesn\u2019t have a meaningful discography or is particularly well-versed in flamenco\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A few days ago, I got a call from a great master of <em>cante<\/em> who complained about having a hard time finding work, and he mentioned feeling hurt by the lack of recognition. \u201cI hope they don\u2019t give me any award when I die. I won\u2019t take it, even if they hand it to me in the ambulance\u201d, he stated, bitterly. It\u2019s really sad what is happening in flamenco. There are barely any masters left in Seville \u2014 I mean, <em>cantaores<\/em> born in the city, not from elsewhere in the province \u2014 but there is one, <strong>Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Wouldn\u2019t it make more sense that Paradas honored this master, a veteran with a long and important career, instead of a young <em>cantaor<\/em> with a long career still ahead of him? What\u2019s the deal? I know I may get banned from Paradas and that Antonio Reyes will have a different opinion about me from now on, but when I decided to become a flamenco critic, I chose the hardest path: being straightforward and sincere.
