This was stated in the presentation that took place at the Meridional restaurant located in the Alfalfa district of downtown Seville. Flanked by the venue\u2019s open-air fireplaces where gourmet Gypsy <em>potajes<\/em> (vegetable stews) were being cooked, Miguel Mar\u00edn welcomed the media, artists, friends and public authorities. Among the latter were <strong>Patricia del Pozo, <\/strong><em>Junta de Andaluc\u00eda<\/em>\u2019s minister of Culture and Historic Heritage, <strong>Almudena Bocanegra, <\/strong>manager of the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Organizations, <strong>Isabel Ojeda<\/strong>, general director of Culture at Seville\u2019s City Council, and <strong>Antonio Zoido<\/strong>, director of the <em>Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abThe festival has become the driving force in promoting flamenco on the international stage\u00bb (Miguel Mar\u00edn)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Miguel Mar\u00edn gave a brief summary of the format of the festival, providing impressive figures. From March 12<sup>th<\/sup> to April 5<sup>th<\/sup>, <em>Flamenco Festival<\/em> will take over the Big Apple with a total of 79 performances in 20 different venues. Among the most important are the New York City Center, The Town Hall, the Lincoln Center, Le Poisson Rouge and the Skirball. The estimated number of spectators is about 40,000. Thus, since the year 2001, this festival \u00abhas become the driving force in promoting flamenco on the international stage\u00bb. Mar\u00edn praised the contribution of private sponsors while stating the need of support from the public institutions.<\/p>\n<p>With the slogan <em>Breaking walls, uniting worlds<\/em>,\u00a0<strong>Flamenco Festival New York<\/strong>\u00a0firmly breaks with tradition to build a new musical language, as can be attested by the fact that the opening show of the festival is by <em>bailaor<\/em>\u00a0<strong>Israel Galv\u00e1n<\/strong>, the participation of avant-garde artists such as <strong>Roc\u00edo Molina, Roc\u00edo M\u00e1rquez, Eduardo Guerrero, Los Voluble<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Rosario la Tremendita<\/strong> and the inclusion of the controversial <strong>Ni\u00f1o de Elche <\/strong>in the lineup. The counterbalance will be provided by <strong>Rancapino Chico, Santiago Lara, Mar\u00eda Pag\u00e9s<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Mercedes Ruiz<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n<p>The director of the festival was joined by several of the participating artists, who spoke one after another. Among them were Mar\u00eda Pag\u00e9s, Roc\u00edo M\u00e1rquez, Miguel Heredia, Lin Cort\u00e9s, Mar\u00eda Moreno, Los Voluble, Rancapino Chico and Mercedes Ruiz. <strong>Jes\u00fas Carmona<\/strong>, representing <em>Fundaci\u00f3n SGAE<\/em>, which will resume its <strong><em>Flamenco E\u00f1e <\/em><\/strong>program, also spoke to the attendees. The presentation was enlivened by the performance of another avant-garde artist, <strong>Maui de Utrera<\/strong>, and the guitar of <strong>Paco Soto<\/strong>.
