{"id":17982,"date":"2020-02-13T22:11:39","date_gmt":"2020-02-13T21:11:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=17982"},"modified":"2020-02-13T22:13:38","modified_gmt":"2020-02-13T21:13:38","slug":"diego-clavel-honored","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/diego-clavel-honored\/","title":{"rendered":"Diego Clavel honored"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although the <em>Reuni\u00f3n <\/em>festival has seen better times, it was about time they remembered the great local <em>cantaor<\/em> Diego Andrade Martag\u00f3n, better known by his stage name <strong>Diego Clavel<\/strong>. The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pueblacazalla.org\/ayto\/index.php\/elayuntamiento\/area-de-cultura\/reunion-de-cante-jondo\">Reuni\u00f3n de Cante Jondo<\/a><\/em>, which used to be a great festival when it was directed by <strong>Francisco Moreno Galv\u00e1n<\/strong>, will honor Clavel in its upcoming edition.<\/p>\n<p>The first time I listened Clavel perform was on occasion of the opening of the <em>Hielotr\u00f3n<\/em>, an ice-skating rink located in what is now Montequinto, in the road between Seville and Utrera. It would have been around 1976. Diego almost fell from his chair singing <strong>Manuel Molina<\/strong>\u2018s <em>cambio seguiriyero<\/em>, a style which gave him renown as <em>cantaor<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>From that evening on, I\u2019d follow him in the festivals, together with fellow <em>cantaores<\/em> <strong>Jos\u00e9 Menese<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Manuel Gerena<\/strong>, all from La Puebla de Cazalla. I liked the town\u2019s style of singing, also echoed by <strong>Miguel Vargas<\/strong>, even as he grew up in Paradas, and <strong>Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla<\/strong>, who grew up in Mor\u00f3n and for whom I have a weak spot. Puebla has been a town with a long tradition in <em>cante<\/em>, without a doubt, and it still is, as can be attested by the likes of <strong>La Yiya, Rubito, Montesinos<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>El Boleco<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things I always liked about Diego Clavel is that he never imitated anyone, because his voice was unique. And I also loved his commitment and passion, of course. It was impressive to see him singing on stage giving it all, particularly in hard <em>palos<\/em> such as <em>seguiriyas<\/em>, <em>ca\u00f1as<\/em> and <em>ton\u00e1s<\/em>. I also remember his version of <em>bambera<\/em>, a <em>palo<\/em> he performed with intense flamenco depth.<\/p>\n<p>After an impeccable career, maestro Diego decided to quit the stages, certainly fed up with the flamenco scene. Diego is such an honorable man that he started feeling uneasy in his profession and decided to retire when he was at his peak. He was able to, because he always took care f his earnings, so he did it. Incidentally, he also left behind a very interesting discography, which sets him apart among the greatest <em>cantaores<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, this is a very well-deserved honor for this maestro from Puebla de Cazalla. He will share the stage with <strong>La Macanita, Encarna Anillo, Ra\u00fal Montesinos Hoyos<\/strong>, the <em>baile<\/em> of\u00a0<strong>Farruquito<\/strong>\u00a0y and the guitars of <strong>Manolo Franco, Antonio Carrion Jimenez, Manuel Valencia<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Pituquete<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was about time they remembered the great cantaor Diego Andrade Martag\u00f3n, better known by his stage name Diego Clavel.
