There wasn\u2019t much flamenco, the traditional kind that you like, but it was an interesting evening. Good music, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 What do you mean \u201cthere wasn\u2019t much flamenco\u201d? There was plenty of it. Look, Manolito, we have to accept that the days of the traditional flamenco we like, particularly me, are numbered. These artists themselves told Quico P\u00e9rez-Ventana\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/entrevistas\/trio-benavent-di-geraldo-y-pardo-flamenco-leaks-pellizco-jondura-no-solo-en-flamenco\">in this website<\/a>\u00a0that <em>jondura<\/em> and <em>pellizco<\/em> are not exclusive to this art form. I got goosebumps several times yesterday, watching these musicians play. There were so good! I had such a great time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013 Now I\u2019m confused, grandpa. What\u2019s going on? This doesn\u2019t make any sense. Now you\u2019re embracing the new trends as I, your grandson, criticize them? Topsy-turvy, isn\u2019t it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 It\u2019s not my fault that you\u2019re too slow to figure things out. Let\u2019s see, my boy. I like traditional things, that\u2019s true, because I\u2019m old as the hills, but I fully realize that the show we attended yesterday was very flamenco, and good flamenco at that. Because flamenco is great due to the great musicians and the great artists. Didn\u2019t you see the things that Jorge Pardo made with his flute? He reminded me of Morente. And, heck, Benavent sounded like Diego del Gastor! If you didn\u2019t notice that, you should quit writing about flamenco.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abThe way Di Geraldo plays the drums is quite something, right? It\u2019s as if he had ten or twelve arms. Good sound, good lightning, a minimalistic stage\u2026 And nothing else. What is good doesn\u2019t need over-dressing\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u2013 The next thing I know, you\u2019ll be cheering Rosal\u00eda like Ortiz Nuevo and Faustino N\u00fa\u00f1ez. Grandpa, seriously, are you feeling OK?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 My dear grandson, from a flamenco perspective, Rosal\u00eda is just worthless. She can\u2019t be compared with any of these three geniuses, obviously. A <em>saeta <\/em>or a <em>sole\u00e1<\/em> by Miles Davis were a thousand times more flamenco than anything by that singer from Barcelona. Flamenco is more universal than you think. Sabicas once told me that one day he was mesmerized in a jazz club in New York listening to a black man singing a <em>bambera<\/em> of Ni\u00f1a de los Peines. His voice was darker than Negro de Ronda!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013 I must be hallucinating, grandpa. So, now you\u2019re the open-minded, and I\u2019m the close-minded? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 I don\u2019t know why you\u2019re so shocked, because I\u2019ve always been open-minded. Marchena was ahead of his time, and I always admired and defended him. Same with Morente, who was heavily criticized whenever he performed in this city and I always ended up arguing with the annoying purists. I always support what is good, talent, quality. If there is quality in Jorge Pardo\u2019s flute or sax, then I love it. Do you understand?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013 So how did you like yesterday\u2019s concert? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 It was delightful for those with a demanding taste.
