{"id":17617,"date":"2016-01-06T19:50:17","date_gmt":"2016-01-06T18:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=17617"},"modified":"2020-01-28T19:51:46","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T18:51:46","slug":"the-chimeras-of-ezequiel-benitez","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/the-chimeras-of-ezequiel-benitez\/","title":{"rendered":"The Chimeras of Ezequiel Ben\u00edtez"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don\u2019t think that in all of Jerez there is one <em>cantaor<\/em> with such vocation as Ezequiel Ben\u00edtez, who is the son of a great aficionado and flamenco <em>connoisseur,<\/em> Alfredo Ben\u00edtez. Besides being a great <em>cantaor<\/em>, Ezequiel is, like his father, a great aficionado whose love for cante borders on madness. When I first met him he was just a teenager and I was amazed precisely at this: his love of the old echoes, of the <em>cantes<\/em> of the countryside, of the truly <em>jondo<\/em>. He seemed to be from another era, from the days when Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n, Juan Mojama, el Ni\u00f1o Gloria and <em>El Carbonerillo<\/em> made a living in the <em>tabancos<\/em> and would only talk about <em>cante<\/em> and women, in Sevillan places such as <em>La Europa<\/em> or <em>Las Siete Puertas<\/em>, at the <em>Alameda de H\u00e9rcules<\/em>. Ezequiel is also a proud <em>jerezano<\/em>, always in love with Jerez\u2019 most significant flamenco neighborhoods, such as Santiago and San Miguel.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I went for walks with him in those neighborhoods and he would look at the old houses is if Chac\u00f3n, Manuel Torres, <em>El Chato<\/em>, <em>Salvaorillo padre<\/em> and <em>Currito el de la Jeroma<\/em> still lived there. I like this, it moves me, specially coming from a young kid (as he was then) because this guarantees the future of the great <em>cantaores aficionados<\/em>. The album he has just released, <em>Quimeras del tiempo<\/em> (<em>Chimeras of Time<\/em>), is a jewel because it summarizes all of this: the feeling and the passion of a young, traditional <em>cantaor<\/em> who possesses a thrilling sense of the <em>jondo<\/em>. Maybe there is a little disguise in the way he sings, in the way he performs the most basic <em>palos<\/em> with a certain mimicry. Yet this happens all the time, it\u2019s nothing new, it has always existed, from the days when Mojama adopted the styles of Chac\u00f3n and Manuel Torres, and when those two, the kings of <em>cante<\/em> in their own time, adopted the styles of Silverio and El Mellizo. When Ezequiel Ben\u00edtez sings in the manner of Antonio el Chaqueta, it\u2019s not a blunt imitation, but rather, an interpretation of that <em>cantaor<\/em>. The same happens when he attempts to sound like <em>El Chozas de Lebrija<\/em> in his unique <em>bulerias<\/em>, or like the great Aurelio Sell\u00e9s singing <em>alegr\u00edas de C\u00e1diz<\/em>. Ezequiel gets into these masters\u2019 souls to find their essence, to understand them and their <em>cantes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>He tries to follow the musical score, the original, as a good performing scribe. It\u2019s worth admiring the way he performs the <em>cantes de comp\u00e1s<\/em>, particularly the <em>buler\u00edas<\/em> and the <em>alegr\u00edas<\/em>, with an astonishing ease, and it\u2019s also fascinating the intensity of his <em>seguiriyas<\/em>, his <em>fandangos por sole\u00e1<\/em> and <em>his fandangos de Pepe Pinto<\/em>. One can tell he recorded what he wanted to record, and that he has done it with a commitment to leave a lasting legacy, something of his liking, so he can be recognized for what he is: a cantaor who is much more than interesting, who possesses unquestionable <em>jondura<\/em> and who has the required and indispensable knowledge to succeed. It\u2019s not easy to be a <em>cantaor <\/em>in Jerez without belonging to some of the <em>cante <\/em>dynasties of this land. It wasn\u2019t easy for El Chato, Salvaorillo, Chac\u00f3n or Cepero, who, regardless, are among the best <em>cantaores<\/em> in flamenco history. <em>Quimeras del Cante<\/em> is definitely a superb album, with good guitars such as those of Rafael Rodr\u00edguez, Diego del Morao, Javier Patino, Jos\u00e9 de Pura and Manuel Parrilla, among others. The album has a good feel to it, a fitting ambiance. Ezequiel had a good time recording it and it shows right away, from his first cante. Let\u2019s hope that this work helps him to achieve greater recognition and a place in the best festivals. Let\u2019s hope this becomes a reality, and not a chimera.
