{"id":17611,"date":"2020-01-28T18:11:57","date_gmt":"2020-01-28T17:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=17611"},"modified":"2020-01-28T18:13:05","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T17:13:05","slug":"rafael-riquenis-heritage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/rafael-riquenis-heritage\/","title":{"rendered":"Rafael Riqueni\u2019s heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One morning, many years ago, I got a call from the mother of <strong>Rafael Riqueni<\/strong>\u00a0asking me to come visit her son in the family\u2019s apartment on Pag\u00e9s del Corro Street, in Triana, because the genius was feeling down. Indeed, when I arrived, he looked like his mind was anywhere except in Triana. \u201cWhat\u2019s the matter, maestro?\u201d I asked him. He answered: \u201cPeople say I\u2019m a genius, but no one is interested in guitar concerts. And since I\u2019m a concert guitarist, <em>cantaores<\/em> have no interest in hiring me, either\u201d. Rafael was tired, disappointed and wanting to trash his guitar.<\/p>\n<p>Seville always had great flamenco guitarists, but it was an outsider, <strong>Paco el Barbero<\/strong>, who started what would become the Seville school, which hasn\u2019t been properly studied yet. This guitarist and composer from Sanl\u00facar, brought to Seville by <strong>Silverio<\/strong> in the early 1880s, had an academy in the San Bartolom\u00e9 district and he also taught in his <em>tabanco <\/em>on Plata Street in downtown Seville, where <strong>Manuel de la Barrera<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Amparo \u00c1lvarez\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>La Campanera<\/strong><\/em> had their academy many years earlier. Thus, Seville was Barbero\u2019s headquarters at the time when he performed many guitar concerts all over Spain, being truly the first one who gave solo recitals with a well-defined repertoire of flamenco <em>palos<\/em>.=<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abWith all he has inherited and the inheritance he\u2019ll leave us, Wednesday evening at the Lope de Vega theater may turn out to be a historic moment\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Maestro P\u00e9rez, Montero,\u00a0<strong>Antonio Moreno<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 born in C\u00f3rdoba but raised in Seville \u2014 <strong>Ni\u00f1o Ricardo, Luis Maravilla, Pepe Mart\u00ednez, Eduardo de la Malena, Diego del Gastor<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Melchor de Marchena<\/strong>\u00a0have been some of the great guitarist of Seville, references of a glorious past which has become somehow forgotten. More outsiders came, such as <strong>Juan Gandulla\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Habichuela<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0<strong>Javier Molina<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Currito el de la Jeroma<\/strong>, among others. This has become known as the <em>Seville school<\/em> <em>of flamenco guitar<\/em>, usually only credited to Ni\u00f1o Ricardo, who is without a doubt the leading exponent of Seville\u2019s flamenco guitar and a primary reference for most flamenco guitarists in Seville and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Rafael Riqueni has already honored great masters of <em>toque<\/em> in one of his best albums <em>Maestros\u00a0<\/em>(1994), paying special attention to <strong>Ricardo, Sabicas<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Esteban Sanl\u00facar<\/strong>. In his new album <em>Herencia <\/em>(\u201cHeritage\u201d), he seeks to further explore flamenco concertists, because he\u2019s mostly a concertist, too, one of the best that has ever existed. It\u2019s not that he doesn\u2019t excel accompanying <em>cante<\/em> and <em>baile<\/em>, because he has also performed with great <em>cantaores<\/em>, but Rafael soon discovered that his true vocation was to play solo guitar and he was given us musical pieces of superb quality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Album contents<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Herencia<\/em>\u00a0will pay tribute to <strong>Paco de Luc\u00eda<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>L\u00e1grimas<\/em>),\u00a0<strong>Mario Maya<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Farruca Bachiana<\/em>),\u00a0<strong>Pepe Habichuela<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Herencia<\/em>),\u00a0<strong>Enrique de Melchor<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Minerico<\/em>),\u00a0<strong>Tomatito<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Nuevos Sones<\/em>),\u00a0<strong>Serranito<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Caf\u00e9 de Chinitas<\/em>),\u00a0<strong>Enrique Morente<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Triste Luna<\/em>),\u00a0<strong>Joaqu\u00edn Amador<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Pureza<\/em>) y\u00a0<strong>Manolo Sanl\u00facar<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Aires de Sevilla<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>He will present his new album on January 29<sup>th<\/sup> at the Lope de Vega National Theater (Seville), with the collaboration of <strong>Rub\u00e9n Olmo<\/strong>, the guitars of <strong>Salvador Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Manuel de la Luz<\/strong>, the percussion of <strong>Luis Amador<\/strong>\u00a0and <em>palmas<\/em> by\u00a0<strong>Diego<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Jos\u00e9 Amado<\/strong>. A mighty showcase of Seville and Triana\u2019s flamenco. With all he has inherited and the inheritance he\u2019ll leave us, Wednesday evening may turn out to be a historic moment.
