{"id":17602,"date":"2020-01-28T13:48:43","date_gmt":"2020-01-28T12:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=17602"},"modified":"2020-01-28T15:25:51","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T14:25:51","slug":"andorrano-fiesta-de-la-frontera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/estela-flamenca\/andorrano-fiesta-de-la-frontera\/","title":{"rendered":"Andorrano: fiesta de la frontera"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I met <strong>Francisco Torres Amaya<\/strong> in Mor\u00f3n de la Frontera in the early 1970s.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>In flamenco circles he\u2019s known as <strong>Andorrano<\/strong>, son of Joselero, brother of Diego de Mor\u00f3n (Dieguito) and nephew of Diego del Gastor, as are Paco, Juan and Agust\u00edn, in addition to other noteworthy relatives such as Pepe R\u00edos, Paco de Amparo and the current dance star, Pepe Torres.<\/p>\n<p>Andorrano stands apart as being specialized in the art of the \u201cfestero\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>That sublime combination of song and dance that seems to define flamenco itself.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Early on he made the rounds of major flamenco venues, tablaos, festivals, the Bienal de Sevilla in 1984\u2026<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>But little by little, for various reasons, he withdrew from public performance except on rare occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Born in 1942, he was, at the time I met him, a fine-looking young man of 30-something.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>In those days people didn\u2019t have TV, or even radio in many cases.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lingering postwar poverty kept life simple, the dusty silence and lack of entertainment set the stage for spontaneous fiestas and small gatherings around the kitchen table.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Casa Pepe was also a popular gathering place\u2026 as well as Retamares, Bar Barea, El Pasaje and others whose names I never even knew.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Flamenco was woven into the fabric of daily life\u2026 a verse or two of sole\u00e1, a fandango or a bit of buler\u00edas with knuckles marking rhythm on the wooden bar where your account was written with chalk.<\/p>\n<p>Flamenco was also heard at the typical weddings, baptisms and communions, although the \u201cmenu\u201d might have been limited to olives and potato chips.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, this never dampened spirits for singing and dancing, not to mention guitar, lest we forget Mor\u00f3n is guitar country.<\/p>\n<p>The big news is Mor\u00f3n is coming to Jerez, to the Claustros de Santo Domingo, on February 29<sup>th<\/sup>, and Andorrano is the featured artist.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>A rare opportunity to glimpse the recent past of flamenco through this artist\u2019s mental prism, traditional buler\u00edas delivered with highly personalized dance moves<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll be backed up by Pepe Torres and Antonio el Carpintero to compose that peculiar Mor\u00f3n feeling, so different from Jerez or elsewhere.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Jos\u00e9 L\u00e9rida, Paco Vega and Manuela R\u00edos will also join them, in addition to guitarists Jos\u00e9 de Pura and Rub\u00e9n Lara among others. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s flamenco fans have seen \u201cfiestas\u201d on Youtube: hundreds of people holding up their cell-phones to record a bit of buler\u00edas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>That\u2019s not what this is about.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><strong>Fernando Gonz\u00e1lez-Caballos<\/strong>, producer, manager and perennial idea-man, was kind enough to offer the following description of the project:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2013 <\/i>This is a fiesta\u2026 this isn\u2019t a show.This time, Andorrano, Pepe Torres and el Carpintero are coming, because I make a selection of artists and try for complicity among them\u2026 in a fiesta there is complicity\u2026 friends, acquaintances, there has to be a rapport, but it\u2019s also true that it\u2019s never the same people, fiestas aren\u2019t repeated, they\u2019re always changing<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 How did you lay it out for the interpreters?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Because this isn\u2019t your standard show\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u2013 <\/i>I speak to the artists and tell them that of course, they\u2019re coming to do a job, because this isn\u2019t a fiesta like the ones they\u2019re used to, like at a bar, but rather they\u2019re coming to a festival, but certainly this has nothing whatsoever to do with what Pedro G. Romero mounted for Israel Galv\u00e1n, with all my respects for Israel, but I\u2019d like to know how many fiestas Pedro G. Romero has seen<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 How would you describe your fiesta?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u2013 <\/i>The idea is that the interpreters come to this fiesta to have a good time, and at no point are they thinking about the audience, because there is no audience as such, they have to consider those present as people at a fiesta.Some people sing, dance or play guitar, some are shouting \u201cole\u201d, some are along for the ride, it\u2019s the way you feel when you suddenly find yourself involved in a fiesta, that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about.
