A few months ago the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerez.es\/nc\/webs_municipales\/turismo_cultura_y_fiestas\/\">City Council Cultural Area<\/a>\u00a0revealed important facts about the next edition: the festival will honor Jerez\u2019s San Miguel district and the \u00abinternational day\u00bb will focus on Paris. As many readers already know, this festival of Jerez takes place at the end of August and it\u2019s no longer just a traditional flamenco summer festival, but its programming has been widened to include a whole week of conferences, exhibits and the popular <em>flash mobs<\/em>. This new format, implemented about four years ago, seeks to also to cover other cultures which have contributed to flamenco art, as it happened in the case of Japan or California (in the past edition). The festival has also a clear focus on youth, to whom the festival\u2019s Thursday evening is dedicated.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, something that has been a surprise in this 53<sup>rd<\/sup> edition is the focus of the organizers on Jerez\u2019s <strong>San Miguel district<\/strong>, which is still vibrant despite the absence of several of its most famous artists who have passed away. Here is where the greatness of Jerez starts, in this district which is now located in the city center. If the glow of Jerez\u2019s history has somehow faded elsewhere, here time seems to have stopped and its flamenco dynasties can brag about continuing to contribute artists to contemporary flamenco. It\u2019s not that San Miguel \u2014 also know as La Plazuela in flamenco circles \u2014 is the same as it was in the old days, because that would be impossible, but we can say that its essence and style hasn\u2019t been seriously eroded.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abIt will be an evening to remember the renowned former residents of this district such as Chac\u00f3n, Manuel Torre, La Paquera, Manuel Agujetas, El Torta, Manuel Moneo, El Garbanzo, Diego Rubichi, Parrilla, Juanillorro\u2026 and even Lola Flores<\/em><em>\u00bb\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Last November, a plaque in the house where <strong>Antonio Chac\u00f3n<\/strong> was born was unveiled, on occasion of the 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of his birth, and <strong>Sol Street<\/strong> was bursting with art, although traffic was not blocked. 2019 was a particularly emotional year for <strong><em>Pe\u00f1a Los Cern\u00edcalos<\/em><\/strong>, which celebrated its 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary, and it was also a year of glory for another <em>pe\u00f1a<\/em> in this district, <strong><em>La Buler\u00eda<\/em><\/strong>, with its <em>Exaltaci\u00f3n <\/em>recited by <strong>Ezequiel Ben\u00edtez<\/strong>. Other of the day-to-day cornerstones of this district are its studies and academies of <em>baile<\/em>, particularly the one on Empedrada Street belonging to <strong>Chiqui de Jerez<\/strong>, which has so many students, as well as those of <strong>Mercedes Ruiz, Carmen Herrera, Esther Aranda<\/strong>\u00a0and the veteran <strong>Ana Mar\u00eda L\u00f3pez<\/strong>. Guitar lessons are also given in San Miguel, by no other than <strong>Manolo Lozano \u2018El Carbonero\u2019<\/strong>. On top of that, the <strong>Villapan\u00e9s Palace<\/strong>, in the Cruz Vieja neighborhood, across Lola Flores\u2019 monument, which had been closed for so long, now hosts C\u00e1diz University\u2019s official master course in Flamenco Analysis and Research, as well as other courses and presentations. The <strong>Festival de Jerez<\/strong> itself uses its facilities for some of its workshops. The <em>tabancos<\/em>, cellars, heritage houses and their people just add to the character of this district.<\/p>\n<p>What is clear is that whoever is in charge of selecting the lineup of this festival won\u2019t have an easy task, because there are so many <em>cantaores<\/em>, <em>bailaores<\/em> and <em>tocaores<\/em> who want \u2014 and deserve \u2014 to perform in this event. Oddly, having so many options makes this task much more difficult. The traditional flamenco families such as the <strong>Agujetas, Moneo, M\u00e9ndez, Rubichi, Carpio<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>T\u00edo Juane<\/strong>\u2019s will certainly take part. Then there are other branches who have been creating their own style, such as <strong>Manuel Ta\u00f1\u00e9<\/strong> and his sister <strong>Tamara, Miguel Lavi, Paco Gasolina, Juan Lara<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Joaqu\u00edn \u2018El Quini\u2019<\/strong>\u2026 There is also the Malena family, with Antonio living for over forty years on Acebuche Street, the same street where Saira Malena \u2014 one of the revelations of last year \u2014 also lives. We cannot forget <em>maestro<\/em> <strong>Paco Cepero<\/strong>, who was born and still lives on Encaramada Street and is often seen walking around San Miguel.
