{"id":17214,"date":"2020-01-07T20:21:19","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T19:21:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=17214"},"modified":"2020-01-07T20:35:25","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T19:35:25","slug":"canta-jerez-1967","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/discos-archivo-en\/canta-jerez-1967\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Canta Jerez&#8217;, 1967"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1967, book collector <strong>Jos\u00e9 Blas Vega<\/strong>\u00a0(Madrid, 1942 \u2013 2012) was hired by the Hispavox record label to be in charge of the folklore department, a position he held until 1983. In short, he was to become Hispavox\u2019s executive producer of flamenco albums. His first project was based on a brilliant and risky idea, with the goal of capturing <em>duende<\/em> in vinyl microgroove, to be enjoyed for one hundred generations. The title captures the essence of authenticity in two words: <em>Canta Jerez<\/em> (\u201cJerez Sings\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>It was the golden age of Madrid\u2019s <em>tablaos<\/em>. To the traditional <em>Villa Rosa<\/em> and <em>Los Gabrieles<\/em> were added, in the 1950s and 1970s, the mythical <em>Zambra, El Corral de la Morer\u00eda, Las Brujas, El Duende, Torres Bermejas<\/em>\u2026 And, above all, <em>Los Canasteros<\/em>, opened by <strong>Manolo Caracol<\/strong>\u00a0in 1963. In those days, almost all renowned flamencos artists lived in Madrid, flamenco\u2019s Mecca, and there is where Blas Vega sought the performers for his album. All of them were from Jerez\u2019s Santiago district, more specifically from a handful of streets where <em>cante flamenco<\/em> had acquired a local, familiar character: Nueva Street, Marqu\u00e9s de C\u00e1diz street, Cantarer\u00eda street.<\/p>\n<p>The cast was part of an inimitable generation of Gypsy <em>cantaores<\/em> from the golden age of <em>cante <\/em>in Jerez de la Frontera: Manuel Soto\u00a0<strong>Sordera<\/strong>, Manuel Valencia\u00a0<strong>El Diamante Negro<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>El Sernita de Jerez<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>T\u00edo Borrico<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Romerito de Jerez<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Fernando Terremoto<\/strong>. All of them lived in Madrid, except T\u00edo Borrico. For whatever reason, the first pick as guitarist, Manuel Morao, was dropped from the lineup. This wasn\u2019t a major setback, though, since in Madrid there were several other first-rate <em>tocaores<\/em> who were used to accompany all of these cantaores in <em>tablaos<\/em>, such as <strong>Paco Cepero<\/strong>, also from Jerez \u2014 although from the rival district of San Miguel \u2014 and <strong>Paco de Antequera<\/strong>, from M\u00e1laga.<\/p>\n<p>The idea was simple but also brilliant: gathering all of them at the Hispavox studio in Madrid at 11 AM and let them feast on ham and T\u00edo Pepe sherry. No one had the obligation to sing, and they would only do so when they felt like it, on open mic. On one side of the studio there was a large table with plenty of food and drink, on the other, a wooden floor ready for <em>baile<\/em>. That\u2019s how an authentic gathering of <em>cante<\/em> took place, where harmony and laughter soon gave way to singing.<\/p>\n<p>Among the eleven tracks of this album, there are two veritable jewels. One is a <strong><em>fiesta por buler\u00edas<\/em><\/strong>, where the <em>soniquete<\/em> of the two guitars feeds on the <em>palmas<\/em> and<em> jaleos<\/em> of all <em>cantaores<\/em>, who sing in the same tune. The other is a couple of <strong><em>cabales<\/em><\/strong>, veritable masterpieces, masterfully performed by El Sernita de Jerez: the cabal of <strong>Silverio<\/strong> and the cabal of <strong>Loco Mateo<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Desde la\u00a0Porverita<br \/>\nhasta Santiago<br \/>\nlas fatiguitas de la muerte, ay,<br \/>\nmare, se me han\u00a0rodeao.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>[From Porverita<br \/>\nTo Santiago<br \/>\nThe sorrows of death, oh<br \/>\nMother, have surrounded me]<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are three <em>seguiriyas<\/em>, each better than the next, performed by <strong>El Sordera<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>El Diamante Negro<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Terremoto<\/strong>. The <em>soleares<\/em> are to die for, with <strong>T\u00edo Borrico<\/strong> making a musical tour from Alcal\u00e1 to C\u00e1diz and from C\u00e1diz to Jerez. Then there are the <em>fandangos de El Gloria<\/em>, sung by <strong>El Sordera<\/strong>. The <em>buler\u00edas por sole\u00e1<\/em> and the <em>Nochebuena<\/em> (Christmas songs<em>) por buler\u00edas<\/em> were performed by <strong>Terremoto<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Romerito de Jerez<\/strong>, respectively. The vinyl is completed with magnificent <em>soleares de Juaniqu\u00ed<\/em>, brought to life by <strong>Romerito<\/strong>, and the <em>martinetes<\/em> of <strong>Manuel Valencia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1987, on occasion of the twenty years of its first edition, Hispaxox re-edited a vinyl version of <em>Canta Jerez<\/em>. This time <strong>Pepe Mar\u00edn<\/strong>\u00a0was in charge of writing the sleeve text, replacing the original by Blas Vega. Mar\u00edn once again wrote a new text in the year 2000, for a CD edition of this album made by Jerez City Council and the <em>Federaci\u00f3n Local de Pe\u00f1as Flamencas<\/em> .<\/p>\n<p>The wonderful book\u00a0<em>Sernita de Jerez, \u00a1Vamos a acordarnos!<\/em>, by <strong>Jos\u00e9 Manuel Gamboa<\/strong>, compiles the answers of several <em>cantaores<\/em> and <em>cantaoras<\/em> when asked which, in their opinion, is the best flamenco album of all time:<\/p>\n<p><strong>El Torta<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>Canta Jerez<\/em>, with Terremoto, Borrico, Sordera\u2026 What I like the best are the <em>cabales del Serna<\/em>, by Sernita de Jerez. They are inimitable, unique. They can be sung in a worse way, but never better, never as good as that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Capullo de Jerez<\/strong>: In my opinion the best [flamenco] album ever recorded has been <em>Canta Jerez<\/em>. It features very good artists, with a lot of <em>soniquete<\/em>, and the <em>jaleos<\/em> come out so naturally. No computers involved!<\/p>\n<p><strong>La Macanita<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>Canta Jerez<\/em>, with Romerito, T\u00edo Borrico, Sordera, Terremoto, Sernita\u2026 There will never be another album like that, regarding flamenco. It\u2019s flamenco history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carmen Linares<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>Canta Jerez<\/em>, it\u2019s wonderful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jos\u00e9 Merc\u00e9<\/strong>: Whenever people ask me to recommend a flamenco album, I always answer \u201c<em>Canta Jerez\u201d<\/em>.
