For <strong>Lola L\u00f3pez<\/strong>, a 55-year-old <em>bailaora<\/em> from Barcelona, flamenco has been a way to escape, as told in a beautiful article by <strong>Ana Carrasco Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong>\u00a0published in <a href=\"https:\/\/periodicodigital.eusa.es\/\">EUSA<\/a>\u2018s university newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>When she was just six months old, Lola L\u00f3pez contracted polio, an infectious disease which causes muscular atrophy and paralysis after attacking the spinal cord. In her case, only one leg was affected, but when she was forty years old, she started to lose mobility in her second leg, requiring a wheelchair to move around.<\/p>\n<p>Far from feeling intimidated by her difficulties, Lola entered the world of flamenco. \u00abI registered in an academy of <em>baile<\/em>. When I came to class, my teacher didn\u2019t believe I was her student, assuming there had been a mistake. During the whole class, I feel rejected when I tried to dance\u00bb, explained the <em>bailaora<\/em> in that article.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abRejection hurts\u00bb, admits Lola. Yet, all she needs is her wheelchair and her art to express all the flamenco she has in her. In 2017, while she was still living in Barcelona, she found out from the social networks during the <em>Festival de Jerez<\/em> about the program <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/actualidad\/flamenco-inclusivo-la-propuesta-del-bailaor-jose-galan\">Flamenco inclusivo<\/a><\/em>, conceived by the <em>bailaor<\/em> and teacher\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.josegalan.net\/home\">Jos\u00e9 Gal\u00e1n<\/a>. She didn\u2019t think it twice and travelled to Seville to start her lessons.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abI don\u2019t limp or stumble, I don\u2019t fall, and I feel nimble\u00bb, says Lola. This artist dances using the breaks and turning the wheels of her wheelchair.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She\u2019s been living in Seville since 2018 and is enjoying her flamenco lessons. \u00abI don\u2019t limp or stumble, I don\u2019t fall, and I feel nimble\u00bb, says Lola. This artist dances using the breaks and turning the wheels of her wheelchair, she heel-taps and moves with elegance, showing that flamenco goes well beyond physical abilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abThe fact is that there have been numerous artists in the past who had different disabilities. That\u2019s the case of <strong>Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla<\/strong> (who was blind) or\u00a0<strong>Enrique el Cojo <\/strong>(literally, <em>Henry the Lame<\/em>). Just imagine how hard is to do footwork being lame! This artist sought to find balance in a different way, making greater emphasis in his upper body and arms. The fact is that when something wears out, we must compensate in some other way. This is very interesting, that\u2019s why I say that diversity enriches flamenco and contributes new perspectives. That\u2019s the reality\u00bb, explained Jos\u00e9 Gal\u00e1n himself in an interview for <em>infomedula.org<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For three years, Jos\u00e9 Gal\u00e1n has taught his <em>flamenco inclusivo<\/em> workshop in Seville. Now, thanks to the backing of <strong>Fundaci\u00f3n Unicaja<\/strong>, he\u2019s also teaching it in C\u00e1diz until June 2020. This project is aimed at people with any type of disability, be it intellectual, physical or any kind of mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>In this workshop, dance becomes a therapeutic tool aiding the development of physical and psychological abilities, focusing on aspects such as coordination, balance and rhythm through music.
