{"id":16744,"date":"2019-12-02T23:25:09","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T22:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=16744"},"modified":"2019-12-02T23:28:00","modified_gmt":"2019-12-02T22:28:00","slug":"new-biography-of-paco-del-gastor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/new-biography-of-paco-del-gastor\/","title":{"rendered":"New biography of Paco del Gastor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Few biographies about flamenco guitarists have been published, particularly well-written ones. <a href=\"http:\/\/almuzaralibros.com\/\">Almuzara<\/a>\u00a0has just released one about <strong>Paco del Gastor<\/strong>, written by one of our best flamenco critics and writers, <strong>Ram\u00f3n Soler D\u00edaz<\/strong>, from M\u00e1laga, whom I admire not just as a flamenco expert but as a person. Even as he\u2019s eight yeas younger than me, he is one of my references, just like his uncle <strong>Luis Soler Guevara<\/strong>. It would be hard to conceive modern flamencology without them.<\/p>\n<p>Besides being a great writer, Ram\u00f3n is a meticulous and honest researcher, having already published important books. <em><strong>Paco del Gastor, de otra cuerda<\/strong><\/em> is his last one, and one of his best. I haven\u2019t finished reading it yet \u2014 I\u2019ve been too busy with work \u2014 but I feel the need to give my opinion about this book, its author and also about Paco del Gastor, whom I admire and value without reserve since many years ago and with whom I\u2019ve experienced unique moments in company of <strong>Fernanda<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Bernarda de Utrera<\/strong>, at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tertuliaculturalflamencaelgallo.com\/presentacion.php\">Pe\u00f1a Flamenca el Gallo<\/a>, in his hometown, and in some family parties.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abThe life of Paco del Gastor (born in Mor\u00f3n de la Frontera in 1944) is worth of a movie. He is a man rich in adventures and anecdotes and he has accompanied with his old golden guitar some of the best cantaores of the last fifty years, from Mairena, Perrate, Fernanda and Bernarda to Juan Talega, Chano Lobato\u00a0and\u00a0Miguel el Funi.\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Francisco Amaya G\u00f3mez<\/strong>, Paco\u2019s actual name, is a nephew of <strong>Diego del Gastor<\/strong>, and thus he follows Diego\u2019s school. Paco is not an imitator, let\u2019s make this clear, but from his school, just like his brother <strong>Juan del Gastor<\/strong>\u00a0and his first cousin <strong>Dieguito de Mor\u00f3n<\/strong>. They are three of his many followers, because if there is one clear and unmistakable school of guitar in flamenco, it\u2019s the one of <strong>Diego Amaya Flores<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>Diego del Gastor<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Ram\u00f3n Soler deals with the artist from a perspective close to him and his school, considering his admiration for Diego and for Mor\u00f3n in particular. This town is not just a quarry of guitarists, but also of <em>bailaores<\/em> and <em>cantaores<\/em>. <strong>Silverio<\/strong>\u00a0spent part of his childhool and teenage years there, El <strong>Fillo<\/strong>\u00a0Jr. and La\u00a0<strong>Andonda<\/strong>\u00a0also lived in that town and Diego Berm\u00fadez Cala\u00a0<em><strong>El Tenazas<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0was born there. These are some historical flamenco artists, but so many good artists have been born in Mor\u00f3n that a list of them would be endless.<\/p>\n<p>The life of Paco del Gastor (born in Mor\u00f3n de la Frontera in 1944) is worth of a movie, and Ram\u00f3n has done a good job in telling us about it, adding all kinds of details and writing from his heart, beyond his good writing technique. He has understood the essence of Paco\u2019s world and of Mor\u00f3n, something essential for writing a good biography. Paco is a man rich in adventures and anecdotes and he has accompanied with his old golden guitar some of the best cantaores of the last fifty years, from <strong>Mairena<\/strong>, <strong>Perrate<\/strong>, Fernanda and Bernarda to <strong>Juan Talega, Chano Lobato<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Miguel el Funi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, I don\u2019t like at all how Almuzara designs its flamenco books, in particular how it doesn\u2019t take good care of the illustrations, which are essential in a biography.
