\u00abMy time is up and I\u2019m quitting the stages\u00bb. Carmelilla Montoya is saying farewell to her professional career for health reasons. But she\u2019ll do it while being honored by over fifty artists with whom she\u2019ll share a special gala at Seville\u2019s Fibes Auditorium<\/a>\u00a0on December 5th<\/sup> at 9 PM. Some of them joined the presentation of this event to the media, an act which took place in the theater of the Cristina Heeren Foundation<\/a>, an entity which is collaborating with this charitable show.<\/p>\n

Eva Yerbabuena<\/strong>\u00a0explained that \u201cCarmen is a strong woman, a role model for everyone\u201d. \u00abWe, flamencos\u00bb \u2014 she added \u2014 \u00abare not just getting together to honor a professional career, because what makes an artist great is the person behind it\u00bb. This same sentiment was expressed by bailaora<\/em> Milagros Meng\u00edbar, cantaora <\/em>Aurora Vargas, guitarist Pedro Sierra and \u2014 with a video message \u2014 by bailaor <\/em>and choreographer Rub\u00e9n Olmo, current director of the Ballet Nacional de Espa\u00f1a<\/em>, which will collaborate with the scenic direction. These are just a few of the many bailaores<\/em>, cantaores<\/em> and guitarists who will honor the bailaora<\/em>, cantaora<\/em> and teacher from Triana in this gala which, as Cristina Heeren summarized, will be a \u201ccelebration of the artistic life of a symbol of the art of Triana\u201d.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Carmelilla Montoya\u2019s treasure<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Carmelilla Montoya was \u201cspeechless\u201d as she tried to thank all her colleagues who will pay her a tribute on December 5th<\/sup> at Seville\u2019s Fibes Auditorium. \u201cMy treasure is the people who love me\u201d, she said very emotionally in the presentation of this gala at the Cristina Heeren Foundation, where she has been a teacher for the last two years. She stated that it will be \u201can incredible evening, an evening to remember\u201d. This bailaora<\/em> and cantaora<\/em> from Triana has a clear picture about the design of this gala, because \u201cit\u2019s complicated to organize so many artists and I don\u2019t want it to be monotonous\u201d, she stated. To that effect, she\u2019ll have by her side Rub\u00e9n Olmo<\/strong>, director of the Ballet Nacional de Espa\u00f1a<\/em>, who will help her in the scenic direction, as he indicated in his video message. Montoya explained that the show is structured in three acts: \u201cFirst, the men will sing a round of ton\u00e1s<\/em> and martinetes<\/em>, then the women will sing and in the section of baile, which will start with Rub\u00e9n Olmo dancing Rafael Riqueni<\/strong>\u2018s Poema de amor<\/em> with zapatilla<\/em>, other bailaores<\/em> and bailaoras <\/em>will add their touch, for example Milagros Menj\u00edbar will dance with her mant\u00f3n<\/em>, which she pioneered, or Eva Yerbabuena will dance copla<\/em>\u2026 if she wants to\u201d.<\/p>\n

It was all confirmed right there. Eva Yerbabuena<\/strong>\u00a0said that she felt, above all, thankful for \u201csitting here, because these women are my role models\u201d. In name of her colleagues, the bailaora<\/em> and choreographer from Granada said that \u201cflamencos will always support each other, because it\u2019s not possible to be a great artist without being a great person\u201d. Guitarist Pedro Sierra<\/strong>\u00a0agreed, stating that \u201cflamencos care for each other, they\u2019re good friends\u201d. This feeling was echoed by Milagros Meng\u00edbar, who recalled the two years they\u2019ve been teaching in the flamenco academy of the Cristina Heeren Foundation, praising not just \u201cher way of teaching, but her good heart\u201d.<\/p>\n

The academic director of the Foundation, Pepa S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>, who presented and moderated this event, highlighted the academic talent of the honored artist. \u201cIn our school we didn\u2019t want Triana to be just an institutional mention, but we wanted to integrate the artists in our classrooms so that its flamenco legacy could be brought to life again\u201d. Cristina Heeren, president of that collaborating entity, agreed, praising the teacher. \u201cCarmelilla\u2019s classes are special, I\u2019ve seen she starting her lessons having their students sing and I think it\u2019s a great way to make them understand the uniqueness of Triana in this art\u201d. Finally, cantaora<\/em> Aurora Vargas<\/strong>\u00a0remembered that \u201cwe grew up together in the same neighborhood and we\u2019ve worked together our whole lives. She added that \u201cCarmelilla Montoya is quite an artist, a great bailaora<\/em> and a terrific person\u201d.<\/p>\n

Over fifty artists<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This tribute, with Jes\u00fas Molina <\/strong>as production coordinator, will feature many other artists. Over fifty bailaores<\/em>, cantaores<\/em> and guitarists will perform for free with this bailaora<\/em> from Triana as she bids farewell to the stages. Among the bailaores, Cristina Hoyos, Antonio Canales, la Farruca, Pastora Galv\u00e1n, Javier Bar\u00f3n, Ana Morales, Rosario Toledo, Adela Campallo, and Mar\u00eda Moreno will perform. Pansequito, Jos\u00e9 de la Tomasa, El Pele, Arc\u00e1ngel, Remedios Amaya, Mar\u00eda Terremoto, Esperanza Fern\u00e1ndez, La Susi, Alba Molina, El Extreme\u00f1o, Segundo Falc\u00f3n and La Tobala will be among the cantaores, and Rafael Riqueni, Paco Jarana, Ni\u00f1o de Pura, Manolo Franco, Paco Cort\u00e9s and Miguel \u00c1ngel Cort\u00e9s, among others, will be the guitarists. This tribute will also feature the comedy duo Los Morancos<\/strong>. Tickets for this gala, which also has the collaboration of Radiol\u00e9, are already on sale at Fibestickets.es<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Carmelilla Montoya<\/strong>, born in Seville in 1962, is an artist with roots in Triana, daughter of Carmen Montoya, niece of Antonia La Negra and Juan Montoya, and cousin of Lole Montoya. She started dancing when she was a little girl, as attested by the iconic TV series Rito y geograf\u00eda del cante<\/em>. Since she was 9 years old, she was part of the ensemble La Familia Montoya<\/em>. When she was 15 years old, she was awarded the National Prize of Baile Flamenco by Jerez\u2019s C\u00e1tedra de Flamencolog\u00eda<\/em>. \u00a0She continued her career performing with artists such as Camar\u00f3n, Antonio Canales and Paco de Luc\u00eda. She has also taken part in shows such as Fedra<\/em>, together with Lola Greco and Amador Rojas, and La Farruca\u2019s Gitanas<\/em>. In 2012 she released her CD Homenaje<\/em>, with the collaboration of Miguel Poveda, La Tana, Raimundo Amador, Remedios Amaya and Alba Molina, among others, showcasing her other artistic talent as cantaora<\/em>, a talent which she has also explored since she was a little girl. She\u2019s been part of the teaching staff at the Fundaci\u00f3n Cristina Heeren de Arte Flamenco <\/em>since 2017.<\/p>\n
