Four o\u2019clock in the afternoon is a time when the pace of life typically slows down, but on November 16th<\/sup>, 2010, it was a moment for the loudest flamenco cheers. After a failed attempt in 2005, the wonderful news came out of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Flamenco had become part of UNESCO\u2019s Intangible Cultural Heritage List<\/a>\u00a0by decision of that organization\u2019s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, formed by twenty-four members. This honor was being contested by no less than forty-seven nominations from thirty-one countries.<\/p>\n

It was in 2009 when the decisive step to give flamenco the place of honor it deserved was taken. In August of that year the nomination was submitted in Paris and in the beginning of 2010 the Junta de Andaluc\u00eda<\/em> campaign Flamenco Soy<\/em> (\u2018I am Flamenco<\/em>\u2019) got started. The goal of the campaign was to promote nationally and internationally this project, which also had the collaboration of the Murcia and Extremadura autonomous communities of Spain, which border Andalusia\u2019s northeast and northwest, respectively. More than thirty thousand people from sixty different countries \u2014 both artists and private individuals \u2014 voted for Flamenco\u2019s nomination in UNESCO\u2019s website<\/p>\n

\u00abThat November 16th, mankind became flamenco\u2019s heritage, in the words of Enrique Morente\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u00abA hemorrhage of great satisfaction\u00bb. Such were the words of cantaor<\/em>\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Merc\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0when he heard the good news. Others, like Jos\u00e9 de la Tomasa<\/strong>, put flamenco art on a higher level: \u00abIt\u2019s above all that, because when the soul speaks, awards don\u2019t matter. The soul is the only thing left in this life\u00bb, stated this cantaor<\/em> from Seville.<\/p>\n

That November 16th, \u00abmankind became flamenco\u2019s heritage\u00bb, said the incomparable Enrique Morente<\/strong>. While we all knew that flamenco was an unmatched and unquestionable art form, rich in history and heritage, UNESCO\u2019s official designation multiplied its value.<\/p>\n

Flamenco has already been included in the new Statute of Andalusia\u2019s Autonomy<\/a>\u00a0and the public institutions have committed to protect, study and promote it. Even so, the hoped-for Flamenco Law<\/strong>\u00a0is still being debated and the government of Andalusia has once again stated that it will promote flamenco<\/a>\u00a0in all educational stages in Andalusia and it will acknowledge the importance of the pe\u00f1as flamencas<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In the year 2011, the Junta de Andaluc\u00eda<\/em> agreed to declare November 16th<\/sup> as the autonomous community Flamenco Day, on the anniversary of its official designation as UNESCO\u2019s Intangible Cultural Heritage. \u00abThis designation also implies a responsibility. It means that the government must know and research flamenco in all its different aspects\u00bb, explained the Culture Councillor at the time, Paulino Plata<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In that first celebration of Flamenco Day, Andalusia\u2019s Culture Council, in collaboration with the Cervantes Institute<\/a>, organized flamenco shows in several cities around the world, from Istambul (Turkey) and New Delhi (India) to Sydney (Australia) and Brasilia (Brasil), with Andr\u00e9s Mar\u00edn, Rosario Toledo, Rosario La Tremendita, David Carmona and Arc\u00e1ngel as protagonists.<\/p>\n

A lot has happened ever since, and on November 16th<\/sup>, 2019, Flamenco Day will be celebrated for the ninth time in Andalusia and around the globe. The Instituto Andaluz del Flamenco<\/a><\/em>\u00a0has organized a wide program of activities, one hundred and thirty six in total, which will take place all over Andalusia.<\/p>\n
