{"id":15920,"date":"2019-10-19T19:35:47","date_gmt":"2019-10-19T17:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=15920"},"modified":"2019-10-19T19:35:47","modified_gmt":"2019-10-19T17:35:47","slug":"silverio-and-his-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/silverio-and-his-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"Silverio and his teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many years ago, I attended a lecture by <strong>Antonio Mairena<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a0<strong>Pe\u00f1a Ni\u00f1o Ricardo<\/strong> in Seville\u2019s Alfalfa district \u2014 Silverio\u2019s birthplace \u2014 and he mentioned that Silverio had trouble being accepted by Gypsies because he was a non-Gypsy with an Italian surname. At the time, I believed that story told by Mairena, like I believed so many others, because I was just 19 years old and I barely knew anything about that mythical star of <em>cante<\/em>. Now, forty years later, I know that the opposite was true: Silverio was beloved by Gypsy artists and non-artists alike. When he was already a teenager living in Mor\u00f3n de la Frontera, it seems that he earned the admiration of <strong>Fillo<\/strong> Sr. \u2014 <strong>Antonio Ortega Heredia<\/strong>, from San Fernando \u2014, so much so that Fillo Jr., <strong>Francisco Ortega Vargas<\/strong>, became jealous and never really got along with Silverio, who was about his same age.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, <strong>Manuel Molina<\/strong>, from Jerez, and <strong>Curro Dulce<\/strong>, from C\u00e1diz, two of the leading <em>cantaores<\/em> of that time, the 1850s, also shared the admiration of Fillo Sr. towards that non-Gypsy <em>cantaor<\/em> from La Alfalfa. No one could criticize Silverio in the presence of those two giants of <em>cante<\/em> without getting in trouble. And we can\u2019t forget how the <strong>Ortegas from C\u00e1diz<\/strong>\u00a0adored Silverio, particularly <strong>Enrique Ortega D\u00edaz\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>El Gordo<\/strong><\/em>, father or Enrique, Gabriela and Francisco Ortega Feria. That friendship and admiration was so strong that Silverio wrote these famous lyrics attesting to it:<\/p>\n<p><em>Por Puerta Tierra no quiero pas\u00e1<\/em><br \/>\n<em>porque me acuerdo de mi amigo Enrique<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Y me echo a llor\u00e1.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em> I don\u2019t want to go to Puerta Tierra<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Because then I remember my friend Enrique<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And I start to cry<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Antonio Mairena knew all this, but all he said was that Silverio learned everything from Gypsies, when this was not the case. Born in Seville in 1831, Silverio lived in Seville\u2019s historic downtown for at least ten years and he was a neighbor of the actor\u00a0<strong>Dardalla<\/strong>, of the <em>bolero<\/em> dancer <strong>Manuela Perea\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>La Nena<\/strong><\/em>, of the celebrated <strong>Amparo \u00c1lvarez\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>La Campanera<\/strong><\/em>, of\u00a0<strong>Enrique Prado\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>El Peinero<\/strong><\/em>, of the <em>bolero<\/em> master <strong>F\u00e9lix Moreno Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong>, of\u00a0<strong>Miguel de la Barrera<\/strong>\u00a0and of many other non-Gypsy artists. I envision the child Silverio closer to the bolero academies, that is, to Seville\u2019s dance scene, than to the forges of San Roque or Triana. How much wouldn\u2019t Silverio have learned in those academies or in the private parties of his neighborhood before he moved to Mor\u00f3n? It\u2019s unthinkable that an 8- or 10-year-old child would cross the bridge and go the parties at Cava de Triana where Fillo, <strong>Josefa, Antonio Cagancho<\/strong>\u00a0and other Gypsy artists performed.<\/p>\n<p>In a well-known 1922 interview of <strong>Jos\u00e9 Ortega Morales<\/strong> \u2014son of <strong>Enrique Ortega Feria<\/strong>, the famous singer of <em>seguiriyas<\/em> from C\u00e1diz \u2014 he clearly stated the Silverio was the foremost singer of <em>seguiriyas <\/em>of his time, according to his father. Thus, Silverio, who wasn\u2019t a Gypsy and who had grown up among non-Gypsy artists until he was 10 years old, is one of those important cases in the history of <em>cante<\/em>, a revolutionary who was only questioned in his time by fanatics of <em>gitanismo<\/em>. Oddly, as time went by, he started being questioned by artists and flamencologists who never did any serious research, such as Mairena o\u00a0<strong>Ricardo Molina<\/strong>, and later by <strong>Jos\u00e9 Manuel Caballero Bonald<\/strong> who called him <em>coplero<\/em> \u2014 a mere singer of ballads, instead of cantaor \u2014 in a lecture at the University of Seville.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
