Most people fail to think of Sanl\u00facar de Barrameda<\/strong> as a flamenco hot-spot. What most comes to mind are images of the river-crossing at Bajo de Gu\u00eda in May with plenty of fandangos and sevillanas, the horse-drawn carts, manzanilla wine, crispy shrimp tortes and horse-racing on the beach.\u00a0 In addition to canti\u00f1as<\/em> of course, and certainly the great maestro Manolo Sanl\u00facar, but we don\u2019t often think of this city the way we do Jerez, C\u00e1diz or Seville\/Triana as being intensely rooted in flamenco. When flamenco investigators speak of \u201cLos Puertos\u201d, they\u2019re usually referring to San Fernando, Puerto Real and Puerto de Santa Mar\u00eda, possibly Rota, Chiclana and Chipiona in addition to Sanl\u00facar de Barrameda (not to be confused with Sanl\u00facar la Mayor in the province of Seville), although\u00a0 flamencologists Luis<\/strong> and Ram\u00f3n Soler<\/strong> point out that virtually no singer born in these towns is attributed with any siguiriya style, which is one way of testing historic flamenco waters.<\/p>\n

A few days ago in Sanl\u00facar, flamenco energy infected every moment at the packed civic center where numerous artists collaborated to raise funds for upcoming religious celebrations. I love these flamenco happenings. Not a party, not a theatrical work.\u00a0 Not a buler\u00edas free-for-all, nor lyrical song\u2026 really not anything in particular, but everything held together by flamenco glue one way or another.\u00a0 A certain way of being and feeling.<\/p>\n

A short list of great female flamenco singers must include two glorious interpreters from Sanl\u00facar, long on knowledge, repertoire and communicative power: Encarnaci\u00f3n Mar\u00edn \u201cLa Sallago\u201d<\/strong> (1919-2015) and Mar\u00eda Vargas<\/strong> (1947) whose cousin, Cristobalina Su\u00e1rez<\/strong>, though never professional, delivers an irresistible flamenco sound on her one commercial recording.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know why manzanilla tastes better in Sanl\u00facar than elsewhere, or why this small town has so many cantaoras, but the younger generation continues to replenish the supply. Mar\u00eda Mezcle<\/strong> and Laura Vital<\/strong> have been cultivating their careers for some time now and sang admirably the other night, canti\u00f1as and fandangos de Huelva respectively.\u00a0 Due to the long lineup of artists, each one was limited to a single cante.<\/p>\n

Naike Ponce<\/strong> was a fine surprise. With blond dreadlocks, and the letter \u201ck\u201d in her name, I have to confess I was braced for anything.\u00a0 But her highly personal style, pushing the limits without loosing sight of the objective, in addition to her fearless sense of humor, well, she was good clean flamenco fun, much as Maui<\/strong> proved to be a few months ago in Utrera. There\u2019s room for this type of hip fiesta singer-dancer, astute performers who have grown up around traditional flamenco and know how to synthesize and extract a flamenco feeling that hard-core flamenco fans can appreciate. Make no mistake, this has nothing to do with Rosal\u00eda.<\/p>\n

With his warm natural voice, singer Gori Mu\u00f1oz<\/strong> captured the peculiar flavor of sole\u00e1 de Triana, as well as alegr\u00edas del Pinini, mirabr\u00e1s and ca\u00f1a for dance, defending nearly obsolete classic forms.<\/p>\n

Mar\u00eda Vargas<\/strong>, today\u2019s undisputed siguiriyas queen, once again surrendered to the intensity of flamenco that flows through her entire being each time she takes on the most demanding forms.<\/p>\n

Antonio Harana<\/strong>, the young show-man, director and master of ceremonies, did a good job holding everything together, and even his histrionic recitation dedicated to La Sallago went down well.<\/p>\n

Fragments of saeta by the main singers instead of a buler\u00edas fiesta finale was a welcome change that reminded the audience of why we were all there in the first place.<\/p>\n
