{"id":15896,"date":"2019-10-17T20:39:13","date_gmt":"2019-10-17T18:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=15896"},"modified":"2019-10-17T20:39:13","modified_gmt":"2019-10-17T18:39:13","slug":"arcangels-termination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/arcangels-termination\/","title":{"rendered":"Arc\u00e1ngel\u2019s termination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year, when I heard that <strong>Arc\u00e1ngel<\/strong> had been appointed as the new director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uco.es\/catedrasyaulas\/catedraflamencologia\/\">C\u00f3rdoba Flamencology Chair<\/a>, I immediately wrote about this appointment and clearly stated that it had been a mistake because, in my opinion, that <em>cantaor <\/em>from Huelva had never shown any interest in the complex world of flamencology. I said that, while he was an artist and a good <em>cantaor<\/em>, he didn\u2019t quite understand the position. I haven\u2019t changed my mind, of course. Not because he was laid off without much explanation, as you know it happened, but because I know Arc\u00e1ngel \u2014 whom I also admire \u2014 and I still don\u2019t think he\u2019s a good fit for the role. It\u2019s not up to me to tell him what he should do, because he\u2019s already a grown-up man, but just because an artist is a good <em>cantaor<\/em> doesn\u2019t necessarily mean he\u2019s suitable to direct a university Chair.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abWhat requirements should candidates possess to direct a Flamencology Chair like the one in C\u00f3rdoba? In my opinion, they should have a broad experience as academics, professional weight in their field, certified knowledge, time to spare and will to work\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I guess this artist did a good job during the year he was the Chair director. I don\u2019t really know, because I don\u2019t closely follow what happens at the C\u00f3rdoba Flamencology Chair, where incidentally I\u2019ve already given two lectures about flamenco and research. I know that he brought in several critics and researchers of his liking, and also several artists. Yet, I guess his work hasn\u2019t been all that convincing, because he has been terminated at the end of his contract. This happens often, so there\u2019s nothing to reproach the Chair for. Perhaps the termination wasn\u2019t handled properly, so it\u2019s understandable that Arc\u00e1ngel is upset about the whole thing, as we learned from an \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eldiario.es\/andalucia\/lacajanegra\/cajon_flamenco\/Arcangel-Flamenco-catedra-Universida_de_Cordoba_0_952955502.html\">interview<\/a>\u00a0by my colleague <strong>Alejandro Luque\u00a0<\/strong>in eldiario.es.<\/p>\n<p>Arc\u00e1ngel will keep doing his thing, which is singing, and he would certainly have learned something from this bitter experience, due its sad ending. The Chair of C\u00f3rdoba already has a replacement, so it will continue to undertake its great work in behalf of flamenco. Dwelling in further controversy won\u2019t benefit at all this cantaor or the university institution. C\u00f3rdoba has always been a role model on how to do things in flamenco in the right way, as attested by its <em>pe\u00f1as<\/em> or its National Contest. This whole Arc\u00e1ngel affair has been, with all due respect, a blunder, but that doesn\u2019t diminish the worth of the institution or the prestige of C\u00f3rdoba as a city of flamenco<\/p>\n<p>What requirements should candidates possess to direct a Flamencology Chair like the one in C\u00f3rdoba? In my opinion, they should have a broad experience as academics, professional weight in their field, certified knowledge, time to spare and will to work. There are many people in C\u00f3rdoba who are beyond qualified for this job, and I never really understood why they had to bring someone from Huelva, with all due respect to that province that I love. I\u2019m sure that they would have analysed this whole thing so they don\u2019t commit the same mistake again, and that the new director will do a wonderful job.
