{"id":15799,"date":"2019-10-09T20:44:13","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T18:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=15799"},"modified":"2019-10-09T20:47:48","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T18:47:48","slug":"waiting-for-a-new-mairena","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/waiting-for-a-new-mairena\/","title":{"rendered":"Waiting for a new Mairena?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m not a die-hard <em>mairenista<\/em>, just a big fan of the <em>cantaor<\/em> <strong>Antonio Mairena<\/strong>, but we must acknowledge that when flamenco was at a very low ebb, he came and led the aficionados towards serious, good <em>cante<\/em>. He was a great reference. Is there anyone like Mairena in this current age of flamenco? There isn\u2019t. The main flamenco starts in our days such as <strong>Miguel Poveda, Estrella Morente, Arc\u00e1ngel<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Roc\u00edo M\u00e1rquez<\/strong>\u00a0focus on making money. I believe Poveda is now planning to record with <strong>Mar\u00eda Jim\u00e9nez<\/strong>. What the heck.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jos\u00e9 Merc\u00e9, Mayte Mart\u00edn<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>El Pele<\/strong>, all still in great shape, are not strong enough to lead and promote serious <em>cante<\/em>. Then there is a big bunch of imitators who will be left behind because few people pay attention to them. There are a few great masters around, such as <strong>Pansequito,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa<\/strong>, <strong>Mar\u00eda Vargas<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Carmen Linares<\/strong>, but they don\u2019t perform often and are venerated by just a small minority.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abThere are very good artists who sing really well, but they don\u2019t have that power of attracting aficionados like Antonio Mairena or Fosforito had\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the last decade, there has been strong new entries in <em>cante<\/em> such as <strong>Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez, Antonio Reyes, Rancapino Chico, Argentina, Pedro el Grana\u00edno<\/strong>\u00a0and some others, and we\u2019ll have to wait and see how much they will be able to achieve the next decade. And that\u2019s about it. Well, there\u2019s also those good <em>cantaores<\/em> who\u2019ve been around forever, but only perform now and then in private parties or in low-key festivals. We love them, but when they release an album they stay put. They are the eccentric <em>cantaores<\/em> of our days, as were <strong>Mojama, Tom\u00e1s<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>El Gloria<\/strong>\u00a0in their days, although I don\u2019t mean to say they\u2019re as good. No one would pay them one thousand euros for a recital, yet those stars who are featured on TV get ten thousand euros, regardless if they sing <em>soleares<\/em> or <em>canti\u00f1as de Pontevedra<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I guess that eventually a new star will come, someone with influence and charisma, who will straighten this out. There have been numerous losses in the last few years: <strong>Camar\u00f3n, Lebrijano, Manuel Agujetas, La Paquera, Lebrijano, Menese, Morente<\/strong>\u2026 These great references in <em>cante<\/em> left us a great legacy, now followed by young artists. Yet, we would need a new Mairena, a fifty-something <em>cantaor<\/em> with a deep love of <em>cante<\/em>, to rekindle our excitement.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that there are very good cantaores, like some of those named above, but they don\u2019t have that power of attracting aficionados like Antonio Mairena had. The same can be said about <strong>Valderrama<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Fosforito<\/strong>. I remember when, in the 1970s, when Fosforito performed in a festival, aficionados from all corners of Andalusia would come to listen to him, from Almer\u00eda to Ayamontes, even as he wasn\u2019t a commercial <em>cantaor<\/em>, but quite the opposite. People came to listen to <em>cante grande<\/em>. Why do aficionados come to festivals nowadays? To listen to imitators.<\/p>\n<p>I know that this kind of article annoys many people, but my intent is to create a debate and make people think about all this.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
