Fifty years ago today, October 6th<\/sup>, the great cantaor <\/em>Pepe Pinto died in his house on Calatrava Street, Seville, where he lived with his wife, the great \u2018Ni\u00f1a de los Peines\u2019, who never realized she had become a widow, due to her illness, which made her lose her memory. Even so, with so much commotion that night in the couple\u2019s house, Pastora wondered \u201cHas Pepe died, maybe?\u201d. Yes, the great cantaor<\/em> from La Macarena district in Seville had died with a trounced liver and the sorrow of leaving the love of his life bedridden and absent-minded, as she called for \u201cher Gypsies\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u00abPastora was 13 years older, but that was never a problem. They had some other issues, but the age difference was never one of them. Theirs was a beautiful love story, and they loved each other until death did them part\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the early morning of October 5th<\/sup>, 1969, Pepe Pinto suddenly felt unwell and went to the bathroom of his house, where he vomited blood. His doctor, Jos\u00e9 Rivero Fonta<\/strong>, was called, and when he saw how ill Pepe was, he gave instructions to take him to the Garc\u00eda Morato Hospital in Seville. He was admitted already in coma, and when they realized there was nothing they could do to save him, they sent him back home so he could die in his bed, surrounded by his wife and brothers. He died at six thirty in the morning and was buried the next day at ten thirty in the morning in the San Fernando de Sevilla cemetery, where the Dom\u00ednguez Solano<\/strong>\u00a0brothers had almost finished building the family\u2019s mausoleum, located across the grave of the bullfighter El Espartero<\/strong>, near the grave of Gabriela Ortega Feria<\/strong>, mother of two other renowned bullfighters, Rafael<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Joselito<\/strong>, and also near the impressive mausoleum of the great bullfighter Gelves, by the sculptor Mariano Benlliure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Not long before he passed away, Pepe sang this fandango to Pastora, although she didn\u2019t quite figure out who had sung it:<\/p>\n

Diera parte de mi vida<\/em>
\npor verte buena otra vez.<\/em>
\n\u00a1Dios m\u00edo, nunca cre\u00eda<\/em>
\nque quisiera a mi mujer<\/em>
\nigual que a la madre m\u00eda!<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019d give part of my life
\nTo see you well again
\nMy God, I cannot believe
\nThat I\u2019d love my wife
\nAs much as my own mother!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s not the best of his lyrics, but they\u2019re certainly the most painful and passionate. The thing is that Jos\u00e9 Torres Garz\u00f3n<\/strong>,\u00a0Pepe Pinto<\/em>, for his whole life adored Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, the cantaora<\/em>, and was madly in love with Pastora Pav\u00f3n Cruz<\/strong>, the woman. He met her at Arahal\u2019s Casino in 1919, when Pepe was just 16 years old. That day, Pastora was visiting the town of her mother, Pastora Cruz Vargas<\/strong>, and of her older brother,\u00a0Jos\u00e9 \u00c1ngel Pav\u00f3n Cruz<\/strong>, known as Arturo. She came into the casino, across Corredera Square, next to the City Hall, and when Pepe saw her, a beautiful 29-year-old brunette, the best singer in all Spain, he approached her and told her he admired her as he had never admired anyone before.<\/p>\n

Fourteen years later, in 1933, they got married at San Gil parish, in Seville\u2019s Macarena district, with the guitarists Antonio Moreno<\/strong>\u00a0and Ni\u00f1o Ricardo<\/strong>\u00a0as witnesses. Pastora was 13 years older, but that was never a problem. They had some other issues, but the age difference was never one of them. Theirs was a beautiful love story, and they loved each other until death did them part.<\/p>\n

Pepe Pinto is among the three or four greatest cantaores<\/em> of Seville, on par with Manuel Vallejo, Manuel Centeno, Manolo Caracol, Carbonero<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Pepe Marchena<\/strong>. He was a child prodigy of cante<\/em> who used to be lifted on tables to sing fandangos in a unique style of his. In that time, he used to sing with another child prodigy, Carbonerillo, and they both revolutionized cante<\/em> in Seville, to the point that even a fandango was written about them:<\/p>\n

De bailaoras y toreros<\/em>
\nSevilla tiene la fama.<\/em>
\nPero en el cante flamenco,<\/em>
\nse llevan la laureada<\/em>
\nEl Pinto y El Carbonero<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Seville is famous
\nFor its bailaoras and bullfighters
\nBut in cante flamenco
\nThe kings are
\nPinto and Carbonero<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

His interest in gambling made him one of the best croupiers <\/em>in Seville, and since he was in high demand by the casinos, he quit cante<\/em> soon after he had started his artistic career. When the government of Primo de Rivera banned casinos in 1923, Pepe Pinto decided to restart his career as cantaor<\/em> and from then until his death he was one of the leading stars of cante<\/em> and one of the great entrepreneurs of this genre. The rest is well-known history.<\/p>\n
