{"id":15483,"date":"2019-09-26T00:42:49","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T22:42:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=15483"},"modified":"2019-09-26T00:48:46","modified_gmt":"2019-09-25T22:48:46","slug":"flamenco-artists-and-music-conservatories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/flamenco-artists-and-music-conservatories\/","title":{"rendered":"Flamenco artists and music conservatories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a pity that two great guitarists and teachers like <strong>Manolo Franco<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Ni\u00f1o de Pura <\/strong>have been laid off from the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csmcordoba.com\/\">Conservatorio Superior de M\u00fasica Rafael Orozco de C\u00f3rdoba<\/a><\/em>, where they had been teaching for years. That got me thinking about something that happened to me years ago. I was giving a lecture in M\u00e1laga and that day I not only talked about information I had uncovered through my own research, but I also sang a few <em>cantes<\/em>. Someone approached me with these words: \u201cYou would be able to teach flamenco history and <em>cante<\/em> in some music conservatory\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They promised me that they were going to make it happen, and one day they called me and told me that, yes, they had found the perfect place for me to start teaching with a good work contract. And they told me: \u201cManuel, you have to send me some poster where you are featured as <em>cantaor<\/em>\u201d. I told them that I had never sang in any festival or <em>pe\u00f1a<\/em>, let\u2019s say, professionally. \u201cWithout that, you won\u2019t be able to work here\u201d, they told me. And that was the end of the story.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abAfter two hours, a couple of beers and some diced ham, she left my house singing much better. Besides, I told her who were Ram\u00f3n el Ollero, La Andonda, La Bilb\u00e1, La Sarneta and Frijones\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Would I be a good teacher of <em>cante<\/em>? I can sing all flamenco <em>palo<\/em>s, and each variant of every <em>palo<\/em>. Without duende or art, but that\u2019s besides the point. I could sit across a young <em>cantaor<\/em> or <em>cantaora<\/em> and, after listening to them, tell them how they could improve the setting of the lyrics or their breathing, or whether their verses should be shortened or extended, or how to control de melody so they don\u2019t go out of tune while straining their voices. That is, I could help them to improve their singing. Could I do that job?<\/p>\n<p>Well I could, and I couldn\u2019t. I\u2019ve been writing about flamenco for forty years, I\u2019ve published a dozen books and I\u2019ve researched flamenco for thousands of hours. I believe that my archive is one of the best flamenco archives in the world. Yet, I don\u2019t have an university degree. I don\u2019t even have a certificate of primary school. That\u2019s life. So, if I wanted to teach in any public or private institution, something I\u2019m not really sure I\u2019d like to do, I couldn\u2019t do it.<\/p>\n<p>I could perhaps set up a school at home and have students pay me one hundred euros per month. With twenty students, I\u2019d be making a lot of money, more than the money I earn with writing. I won\u2019t do that because what I really like is writing, being a journalist, and I can\u2019t see myself teaching. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s easy to teach how to sing, for example, although it\u2019s possible to teach someone how to improve their way of singing.<\/p>\n<p>One day a <em>cantaora<\/em> visited me at home and asked me to give her my opinion about the way she sang <em>cantes por sole\u00e1<\/em>. She sang at my place and I realized she was terrible, as she didn\u2019t finished her verses properly because she released her breath too early, she didn\u2019t remember the lyrics and, above all, she was unable to keep the rhythm of the <em>sole\u00e1<\/em>, and if a <em>sole\u00e1<\/em> is not sung at the right rhythm (<em>comp\u00e1s<\/em>), then it\u2019s not a <em>sole\u00e1<\/em>. After two hours, a couple of beers and some diced ham, she left my house singing much better.
