{"id":15440,"date":"2019-09-23T20:10:03","date_gmt":"2019-09-23T18:10:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=15440"},"modified":"2019-09-24T19:32:53","modified_gmt":"2019-09-24T17:32:53","slug":"thats-not-the-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/thats-not-the-point\/","title":{"rendered":"That\u2019s not the point"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The controversy about appointing <strong>Ricardo Pach\u00f3n<\/strong>\u00a0as the new director of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.juntadeandalucia.es\/cultura\/flamenco\/\">Instituto Andaluz del Flamenco<\/a><\/em> is focusing on whether he knows enough about flamenco or not, but that\u2019s beyond the point. The previous director, <strong>Mar\u00eda \u00c1ngeles Carrasco<\/strong>, wasn\u2019t a flamenco expert by any means, but she did a rather good job. Pach\u00f3n has lived his whole life immersed in flamenco and has experienced it up close, so he certainly knows enough about it, even as he once said that he met <strong>Joaqu\u00edn el de la Paula <\/strong>in Alcal\u00e1 de Guada\u00edra, which cannot be true since Pach\u00f3n was born four years after that king of the <em>soleares alcalare\u00f1as<\/em> died. Just an unimportant slip of the tongue, no doubt.<\/p>\n<p>I have a high regard for many of the things done by Ricardo Pach\u00f3n, but I loathe others. I don\u2019t need to wait and see what he will do at the IAF, if he ends up as director, because I know where this is going, and I sincerely believe this is the worst news we could have heard in these early days of fall. There was a public tender, there were specific requirements for this position and apparently Pach\u00f3n achieved the highest score in the selection process. That\u2019s all good, no complaints here. In previous occasions we\u2019ve complained that the directors have been hand-picked, with shameful results.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abPach\u00f3n is a die-hard \u2018gitanista\u2019 who usually disregards anything that\u2019s not made by Gypsy artists\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The problem with this man being the boss in flamenco, having public money and the power to decide many things regarding our art, is his ideology. Pach\u00f3n is a die-hard <em>gitanista<\/em> who usually disregards anything that\u2019s not made by Gypsy artists. He belongs to that group of people linked to this art who, many years ago, did a lot of harm with the matter of whether non-Gypsies were capable of being flamenco artists or not.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the fact that the man in charge of this art in the <em>Junta the Andaluc\u00eda<\/em> is someone who has said that only Gypsies can sing flamenco is, in my opinion, very bad news. It\u2019s actually dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Let me tell you a true story. In 1991, the record label <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senadormusica.com\/\">Ediciones Senador<\/a>\u00a0asked me to put together an album with never-released <em>cantes<\/em> by <strong>Juan Talega<\/strong>, to celebrate the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of his birthday. I accepted the challenge and I started looking for private recordings with good sound quality to do a worthy job and pay tribute to that famous Gypsy <em>cantaor <\/em>from Dos Hermanas.<\/p>\n<p>The record label wasn\u2019t aiming to make a profit with this project. They rather wanted to add an album featuring such vintage flamenco to their already rich catalog. We gave 300,000 pesetas to <strong>El Cano<\/strong>, son of Juan Talega, for his authorization. There was nothing left in the budget. I went to the house of Ricardo Pach\u00f3n to ask for one <em>cante<\/em> and complete the repertoire, and he demanded 300,000 pesetas for it. For one single <em>cante <\/em>that he had recorded of that master of <em>sole\u00e1<\/em> in some party, certainly without giving Talega any money for it.<\/p>\n<p>He had all the right to demand money for that recording, because he owned it, but that gives us an idea of his mindset.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
