{"id":15397,"date":"2019-09-19T21:31:40","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T19:31:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=15397"},"modified":"2019-09-19T21:35:35","modified_gmt":"2019-09-19T19:35:35","slug":"schools-of-cante","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/schools-of-cante\/","title":{"rendered":"Schools of cante"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One day, <strong>Naranjito de Triana<\/strong>\u00a0called me at home asking me to pay him a visit at the <em>Fundaci\u00f3n de Flamenco Cristina Heeren<\/em>, where he taught <em>cante<\/em>. \u201cI want you to listen to this girl from Finland, so you can see that <em>cante <\/em>can be taught\u201d, he told me. I went to listen to this Finnish girl, but her singing deserved a fine. I mean, she had merit, considering where she was from, but her s<em>ole\u00e1<\/em> wasn\u2019t good at all. Yet, Naranjito was proud of his work in that school and he was in favor of having academies of <em>cante<\/em>. That was also the case of <strong>Ram\u00f3n el Ollero<\/strong>, <em>cantaor <\/em>from Triana, who in the early 1900s taught <em>cante <\/em>at his home on Palomas street, in the heart of Seville\u2019s La Feria district. Since he could no longer sing, he earned a few <em>pesetas<\/em> teaching young men and women how to sing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/strong>\u00a0did the same thing in the academy of her sister-in-law <strong>Elo\u00edsa Alb\u00e9niz<\/strong>. According to Elo\u00edsa, whom I met when she was already 90 years old, some young <em>cantaores<\/em> from La Alameda and all that area of Seville would go there so Tom\u00e1s could help them with some basic <em>cantes<\/em>. Tom\u00e1s also believed that it was possible to teach <em>cante<\/em> or, at least, polish the styles, because trying to teach someone without natural talent is almost impossible. Tom\u00e1s would listen to them and would point out right away when they were not breathing properly or when they were going offbeat. Let\u2019s not forget that this youngest sibling of the Pav\u00f3n family was a big fan of classical music, particularly <strong>Chopin<\/strong>. He knew that a <em>cantaor<\/em> should have a burning flame inside, as in any other art genre, but he thought that it was possible to train <em>cantaores<\/em> with lectures and wise advice.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Fernando El Herrero visited Chac\u00f3n at his house, asking for help in one single cante, the caracoles. \u00abLook, Fernando, your style is better suited for cabrillas instead\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nowadays, is not just flamenco schools that are trendy, but also courses of <em>cante<\/em>, taught by artists or by good aficionados. Yet, as far as I know, there are no municipal schools of <em>cante<\/em> in places with a long tradition of <em>cantaores<\/em>, such as Mairena del Alcor, for example. In that town there are no children <em>cantaores<\/em> and in a couple of decades there will be no new <em>cantaores<\/em> or <em>cantaoras<\/em>. Some come up now and then, such as <strong>Jos\u00e9 de la Mena<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Manuel Castulo<\/strong>, but there are not many. <strong>Juan Antonio Ram\u00edrez<\/strong>, <em>cantaor<\/em> from Seville now living in Mairena, has his own school, but there isn\u2019t any free, public school for aspiring <em>cantaores<\/em>, or even any plan to create one.<\/p>\n<p>There is a funny story about this involving two <em>cantaores<\/em>: an older one, <strong>Chac\u00f3n<\/strong>, and a younger one <strong>Fernando el Herrero<\/strong>, from Cabezas de San Juan, near the Lebrija marshlands. When the master from Jerez lived on Seville\u2019s Trajano street, El Herrero visited him at his house, asking for help in one single <em>cante<\/em>, the <em>caracoles<\/em> (a flamenco <em>palo<\/em> which also means <em>snails<\/em>). Chac\u00f3n spent a long time with Fernando, but there was no way he could sing the <em>caracoles <\/em>properly. Exasperated, Chac\u00f3n said \u201cLook, Fernando, your style is better suited for <em>cabrillas<\/em> instead\u201d. \u201c<em>Cabrillas<\/em>\u201d being the little goats so common in the Lebrija marshlands\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
