She\u2019s also the tough kind. Whenever I imagine the creation of a show about <strong><em>Caf\u00e9 del Burrero<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and its famous photograph of flamenco women in the 1800s, I can picture this cantaora from Puebla de Cazalla sitting next to <strong>La Juanaca, La Serrana, Gabriela Ortega, La Mejorana, Pepa de Oro<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Lola P\u00e9rez<\/strong>, wife of <strong>El Perote<\/strong>. Most of them were both artists and cigar-makers, like La Serrana, daughter of <strong>Paco la Luz<\/strong>. They were daring women who managed to stand out in a man\u2019s world, although this wasn\u2019t as hard as the flamenco feminist movement wants us to believe.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I wonder what\u2019s going on with La Yiya. There aren\u2019t many <em>cantaoras<\/em> like her and she should be more popular and feature in more festivals. I get that she doesn\u2019t get interviews in <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em> or in other national newspapers, because they\u2019re too busy promoting <strong>Rosal\u00eda<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Sole\u00e1 Morente<\/strong>. You may wonder what\u2019s Yiya\u2019s contribution to <em>cante<\/em>, and the answer is easy: interpretative quality, honesty and courage. Yet, all this means nothing for those who never believed in <em>cante<\/em> as a traditional genre who can be performed like a classical composition of <strong>Falla <\/strong>or <strong>Turina<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abLa Yiya performs traditional palos, that is, the same as always, but with a freshness characteristic of a young cantaora who is unrivaled in soleares and seguiriyas among today\u2019s performers\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s what this <em>cantaora<\/em> from Puebla de Cazalla is: an outstanding performer of traditional <em>cante<\/em>. And she doesn\u2019t imitate anyone. She has her influences, of course, and she sometimes reminds me of that <strong>Carmen Linares<\/strong>\u00a0of the 1970s who sang like the <em>cantaoras<\/em> of past, glorious days. But that\u2019s it. <strong>Ana Ram\u00edrez Limones<\/strong>, her real name, is from Puebla de Cazalla, which was also the hometown of <strong>Lola la de Lucena<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla<\/strong>, two great <em>cantaoras<\/em>, the former from the 1800s and the latter from last century. Yet, Yiya was born in the 1980s, the age of the great festivals, <strong>Francisco Moreno Galv\u00e1n<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Jos\u00e9 Menese<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I admit that I\u2019ve listened to Yiya\u2019s new album, <em><strong>A fuerza de coraz\u00f3n <\/strong><\/em>(\u201c<em>By the heart\u2019s strength<\/em>\u201d), recorded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ladrogueriamusic.com\/\">La Droguer\u00eda Music<\/a>, with the same attitude as I listen to great classical works from other genres. I was looking forward to have my soul shattered in pieces with well-defined <em>palos<\/em>, with depth and without <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/ojana-detector\">ojana<\/a><\/em>. And I found a cantaora with a mature, well-rounded and solid voice, performing traditional <em>palos<\/em>, that is, the same as always, but with a freshness characteristic of a young <em>cantaora<\/em> who is unrivaled in <em>soleares<\/em> and <em>seguiriyas<\/em> among today\u2019s performers. Yes, in <em>palos<\/em> which, according to <strong>Mairena<\/strong> and <strong>Juan Talega<\/strong>, belonged to men, as if it were just a matter of hormones.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of space would be necessary to make a detailed musical analysis of this great album, with lyrics by Francisco Moreno Galv\u00e1n adapted by <strong>Pepe el Chachas<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Chemi L\u00f3pez<\/strong>, and the guitars of <strong>Manolo Franco<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Antonio Garc\u00eda<\/strong>. I\u2019ve liked the <em>seguiriyas<\/em>, with a wonderful <em>cante<\/em> of <strong>Antonio Monge\u00a0<em>El Marrurro<\/em><\/strong>. Her <em>soleares de C\u00e1diz<\/em> and <em>soleares de Alcal\u00e1<\/em>.
